Severson got a 3rd…but dmen have longer shelf life (and Sevo really wanted the 8th year). So hard to use as comp.

I think the last time a top winger saw his rights traded was Scott Hartnell, who was shipped from Nashville to Philly with a dman for a 1st (but it was, in a way, the completion of the Forsberg trade…and was probably in a grey area of the rules at the time). But could maybe build a comp around that one.

Maybe they could get a rental replacement. Depends which team.

Does Tree really have the appetite to give this core another kick at the can? You pay Nylander 10 and you've basically eaten up the entire cap jump with his new salary. Then Mitch is going to need his raise, probably a solid 2 mil more than he makes now. Sure, Tavares comes off the books, but now you need a 2C and there don't appear to be any internal options, maybe you resign Tavares to 7AAV for a few years, total cap gain between now and the 25-26 season is -$1mil. So whatever the cap jump is for the next two seasons, take away a mil of that, and use it to upgrade on D, the bottom 6, and goaltending.

I have an impossible time believing he wouldn't take that as a direct insult. Maybe you could get him to take 6, but you're not going to find a 2C willing to come to TO for less than that, at least not one that's any good.

I would argue he will there’s not gonna be a lot of cap left after Knies and woll get they’re raises, he definitely doesn’t want to leave Toronto

Whether there's cap space or not, pride plays a role, and while he may not want to leave Toronto, offering him bad 3rd line/good 4th line money to play on the 2nd line, after being the captain for YEARS and still producing at a prodigious rate, that's an offer likely so insulting he walks.
