Description
This assumes the Pens will be in a place where they won't make the playoffs and are trying to move any pieces with value to help a retool for next year. Jeff Carter waives his no move to ride on sidelines with Canucks on their playoff run while Vancouver agrees to facilitate getting Garland off the books.

These Carter trades are getting maddening...

Here's the thing. If the benching of Carter continues, I could see him becoming more amendable to a trade because he wants to play. With all due respect to VAN's start, he'll only want to go a true contender and you'd have to hope there's one that would want him. You're talking about a very small list of teams he'd want to go to, let alone them actually wanting him.

It doesn't matter.

A) Barring Jake coming out right now and saying he won't stay here, the Pens aren't moving Guentzel
B) The chances of moving Carter are very slim and he won't waive to VAN.

That's a big no. The only way the Canucks would even consider moving Willander is for a top RD Weegar, Andersson with term or who is young with lots of RFA ahead etc.

Canucks don't need or want Guetzal. That doesn't mean he doesn't have value, but why are you trying to trade him to the Canucks. Target teams that need scoring wingers. Seattle etc.

A) the only reason Jake isn't signed right now is because Dubas knows the second he extends him he is a worthless asset. If the Pens in this version can't make the playoffs extending Jake makes no sense as a larger overhaul is clearly needed and you can't do that after a Jake extension. I also do not think they want to move him right now, but if the Pens can't make the playoffs (read description) then moving Jake is a must.
B) If the Pens clearly aren't making the playoffs come March, I think you are way underestimating Carter's standards to move. This is probably his last season and regardless of how good the destination is I doubt he would rather spend his last couple of months playing nothing hockey vs making any sort of run in the playoffs.

Completely disagree in every aspect of what you're saying.

You still are not factoring in teams that would actually WANT Carter.

As far as Jakes goes, that logic is beyond wrong. This is just something that happens. Sure, Dubas probably wants to see how things play out, but he's not waiting because he thinks Jake's contract would be worthless; that's just bizarre logic.

Canucks need depth scoring, they have started the year out hot but it's likely not sustainable when you look at the team shooting and xgoals for vs actuals. Group will come back down to earth. Also, getting Connor Garland off the books is a huge part of this trade. With extensions needed for Hronek and Petterson this upcoming off season, that contract will have to move and this is a way to take a real shot this year and fix a long term issue.

This isn't really how that works....

If a team is going to pay a haul for a top line scoring winger like Guentzel, they will 100% want to extend him. If Dubas does a sign and trade, all the better. Guentzel will be a hefty price to acquire, why would a team pay that price just to lose him after the playoffs? They'll want to keep him.

How does trading our best prospect and a 1st for a 1st line winger add depth scoring? That adds a star player, adding depth scoring would be dealing a 3rd/4th for someone like Jarnkrok to add to our bottom 6. Adding a 1st line winger isn’t depth.

The Canucks can sign Hronek and Petey without moving Garland. The Canucks need a top 4 RD and ideally a true bottom 5/6 RD. Ideally also a 3c.

If they trade Garland on the bottom 6 they are set for depth scoring even without him, they're fine. It feels like you don't even know who the Canucks bottom 6 is. You've got Suter Beauvillier and Garland. Whose goals in the last 3 season goes 14, 15, 14 , 18, 12, 15 and 17, 19, 12 respectively. A reminder that the third season on each of those is the covid shortened season. They weren't putting those up in the top 6 roles or with lots of powerplay time.

Then 4th line Joshua had 11 last year and 3 in 30 the year before, Hoglander had 3 in 25 last year, but the 10 in 60 and 13 in 56. Lafferty had 12 last year, 5 in 56 the year before.

The Canucks have plenty of bottom 6 scoring. Plus they have lots of good young wingers who will be pushing for spots.

Would the Canucks be better if they swapped Guentzel for Garland rather than just keeping Garland, sure. But should they pay to do so, no. Would it make more sense to try and move Garland's money to 3c or wing instead of swapping it with another winger yes.
