Description
I guess I hear things haven't gone well in NY for Alexis so wondering if a change of scenery does the trick. Not sure I nailed the value but just throwing it out there. MOJO has a NTC and I'm not sure if it's a full NTC or how many teams are on it, but let's assume a trade to NY could be consummated. Just want to hear thoughts and opinions from both sides.

He has zero trade protection. That offer isn't going to come close to getting him if he's made available

A trade for Laf starts at a 1st.

Minimum.

Mojo can be used here as cap compliance, and can be utilized in all three foward spots by NY. But he's not adding much value to the deal. And while Laf's value may have diminished. It's not by that much. He's still going to cost a lot to acquire, if he's even available.

So one of Minnesota’s A-level prospects needs to go back. Again, at minimum. Either likely Ohgren or Yurov. A couple years ago I'd of said Yurov, since at the time NY needed RW talent . But I don't know if that's still true or not.

Bottom line, this isn't anywhere close to enough.

Johansson has a NTC, on both years of his 2x$2M contract that he signed during the playoffs last year. He would of been UFA this past season otherwise.

But you're correct that that's not enough for Lafreniere.

Lafrenière will cost no where near a 1st plus a A prospect. He’d be lucky to get a 1st in return at this point. Something similar to what Nail Yakupov got Edmonton is a fair comparison.

Then they wouldn’t trade him lol. He’s doing fine right now with Panarin and Chytil

Someone who gets it. A lot of people don’t realize there’s a difference between laffy’s value VS what it’ll take to pry him out of NY

Guess what then we don’t move him. What he’s worth versus what we’d be willing to trade him for are two very different things. The trade above isn’t gonna cut it. At the very least I’d want another 22 year old making less than $3 mil for another year who’s had at least 35 points in the league at 21. If not there’s no reason for us to trade him.

And the OG author, a Wild fan, expressly stated in his post description that Johansson has a NTC. But wasn't sure if he had a full NTC or just a 10-team NTC.

Whether Lafreniere has one or not is inconsequential and irrelevant to the discussion at hand. It was strictly in regards to Johansson.

He absolutely does.

1) Lafreniere is hardly Yakupov.

2) He's only 22. There's still plenty of time for him to break out.

3) It's incredibly hard to produce top-six production from a 3rd line role. Which is where he's been stuck since he entered the league. Under two different coaches, now three, and has yet to have any consistent time in NY's top-six. That kinda matters.

In fact, this is literally the first year that he's had either the opportunity to seize a top-six role or will be utilized in one regularly. He's otherwise been blocked from the role to date.

It's incredibly early to be calling him a bust.

4) A former 1st overall pick who is still under 23 years old is still going to command a hefty acquisition price regardless of their production or development. Because that potential upside and talent is still going to be there. Especially when that player HAS shown flashes of the skillset that got them picked 1st overall in the first place even in the NHL.

At this point Laf needs either one if two things.

1) To be given a top-six role, and let him sink or swim no matter what over the course of an entire season.

Or 2) Be given a fresh start somewhere else.

By the time a player is 22 and was a former first round pick, they’re expected to be a big contributor in the NHL. & if that player was the former #1 overall pick, he’s absolutely expected to be a point producer in the top 6 consistently by 22.

Yakupov was a former 1st overall pick that was traded when he was 23 and had 80 points in 204 games at the time (0.39ppg).
Lafrenière currently has 92 points in 218 games played (0.42ppg) and is only a year younger than Yakupov was at the time he was traded.. how is that not a comparable? Just because it doesn’t fit your narrative?

If you think he's so bad then why do you want to trade for him? If he really cost this little to acquire then he would've been traded long ago. You have an unrealistic view of how trading works in this league, this is a supply and demand market and the Rangers frankly have no reason to trade Laf when he's on a very cost-effective contract. Also if you wanna bring up comparables how about Alex Newhook, Griffin Reinhart, Nils Lundkvist, and Kirby Dach? They were all traded 3-5 years after they were drafted(which is where Laf is now) for a first and more and have had similar or worse point totals relative to their position at the time they were traded. If you wanna say that Yakupov is the only comparable for his point totals in the NHL, then please take a look at the Sedins.

The biggest thing you're not understanding though about this is leverage, Laf has no trade protection and is on a low-cap contract. Why would they give Laf up? What reason would they have to give up a player who's played well on the 2nd line so far this season especially on a high-value contract? The answer is none, so they won't trade him unless another team gives them a very good reason. A middle 6er(who honestly I would take Laf over anyways) and a few mid-picks aren't gonna cut it. And don't even get me started on the retention you're asking for on Laf.

Now compare numbers at even strength only because he doesn’t play powerplay or penalty kill lol. He’s been strictly a 3rd liner who puts up about 40 at ES
