Why would the jets be sending the extra pick for retention? They’d rather just keep him.

I honestly don't see a team giving MTL a 1st for him. A 2nd is reasonable, a 1st is just not worth it. We know Monahan is also very injury prone, so we will have to see how he performs. Either way, if MTL can gain a 1st, 2nd or even a 3rd, it's still a massive win for them considering they got a 1st for him already.

WPG needs to move out a defenceman. They need to give opportunity to youngsters like Heinola, Samberg, Stanley, and Chisholm and because Schmidt or Pionk would be harder to move, they move on from Dillon.

He provides physicality and is decent defensively, but he isn't worth more than Hirvonen (a former 2nd) and a 3rd. The 5th is just a sweetner on top, and I wouldn't care if it wasn't part of the deal.

They don’t need to give a sweetener if the player is what another team covets. Toronto needs to add to the 3rd team if they want double retention s you say in this case

The 3rd round pick is 3 drafts from now. Montreal's 5th plus retention is worth at least as much as the 2026 3rd and a 7th. So after that, you essentially got Monahan for Voit. So obviously not fair from the Montreal aspect.

It's too early to determine Monahan's TDL value. A 1st (with conditions due to injury concerns) is easily within reach if he produces similarly to last season, especially with his new affordable cap hit.
You don't leave value on the table simply because you think you've benefitted enough from an asset. The fact they already received a 1st for taking him is immaterial. That contract no longer exists, nor do the cirumstances that lead to it happening.
This offer may be fair when it gets to that point, we'll have to wait and see, but if Monahan were to be traded right now, this is underwhelming.
Add a condition to the 3rd to allow it to become a 1st if Monahan plays X amount of games/playoff games and it is more reasonable.
Toronto is insured against injury and Montreal gets "something" if Monahan is injured, but a 1st if he reamins a healthy contributor.

Very weak TOR offers.

Hirvonen isn;t an A prospect in any system but TOR, but WPG adds a pick as well?

Monahan has shown no ability to stay healthy, and until he does he has little value, but if he does stay healthy and produces, you think a 2nd THREE drafts away, a Voit who is too soon to see if hes a B+ prospect, a B prospect or a C, and a 7th for Monahan, retention AND a high in the round 5th?

Thats insane!
