Joseph is very solid and will help us make the playoffs. We need Joseph in the bottom 6.

How does that make sense? He was clearly injured half the year and he was the only decent player in the bottom 6 and played with AHL scrubs because of injuries. Faulting Joseph is pretty funny

It’s not awful when he’s on his game and playing with decent players. I bet if Norris didn’t get injured and Pinto stayed at the 3C and played with Joseph , Joseph would’ve faired much much better . And wouldn’t have played with grinders the whole year

Probably Kubalik or Brannstrom . One of those 2 make sense. Especially with the way Smejkal, Greig and Jarventie have looked in camp maybe Kubakik

I'm not sure if dorion will duml kubalik since he was the primary player coming back in the debrincat deal

Yeah and Kubalik was needed until we got Tarasenko . But now these 2 kind of do the exact same. Where as Joseph is a 2 way speedy winger than is excellent on the PK which we need. And his point totals will likely rebound on a much better 3rd line this year

Yeah Sens fans would rather let their “future star” sit so you can’t win that fight. I don’t mind the values but I really think the 4th would have to be a 2nd in the TK trade for Philly to consider

    That's polite...

They value Ostapchuk as a 1st round pick. They drafted him early 2nd and his stock has rose this. He's definitely in the long term plans.

This ACGM is asking 1st + 2nd value to take a player that was overpaid a few hundred K$ last season and probably won't even be overpaid going forward, maybe even underpaid. Only on CF, some people might not realize how SILLY that is.

They also value Joseph and clearly don't agree with paying valuable pieces to move him, even if they need to shed some cap. Dorion will obviously have to move someone else. Kubalik IMO

like he helped you make the playoffs last year, right?

He played with terrible players last season, he had no help for the bottom-6

Norris injury : forced Pinto (who was not ready for that role) on the 2nd line

Formenton off-ice issues : not sure why but Dorion didn't see it coming and signed Tyler Motte last minute to "replace him"

Connor Brown : Dorion traded him in the off-season due to his lack of foresight

All of this resulted in the Sens having the worst bottom-6 in the NHL and also bad goaltending (Dorion inexplicably traded Gustavsson for Talbot)

I think you should look at contracts for 26-35 y/o forwards (UFA years), you might be in for a shock. I can help :

    https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/active/2024/caphit/all/forwards?salary-structure=one-way&stats-season=2024&limits=age-26-35,caphit-2500000-5000000

Joseph is a lot better defensively than many guys who produces more or he produces more than guys who are also good defensviely

The only thing that has built this narrative is CF's stupid/ignorant hive mind.

There's only one primary piece back in the DeBrincat and it's the 1st round pick. It's like 80% of the value returned. The rest are to complete the value and "save face"

I mean you get Laughton but also some useful cap space for later in the year, maybe not that exact trade but something similar is worth considering

Scott Laughton is definitely the most overrated player on CF lol

He isn't worth anything close to what is proposed here, even with the cap space created.

    Scott Laughton? tears of joy

Mathieu Joseph is better defensively at ES, on the PK and has a better scoring rate (pts/60)

Stop looking at hockeydb.com one second and you might discover more on other sites. Laughton is a glorified 3rd liner, only reason he scored more than 32 pts for the first time in his 10 year career is because he had Top-6 minutes with PP too.

Thing is Faksa was a cheap buyout if Nill wanted that cap space. Paying a premium for a player and a premium for unloading salary that could have easily been bought out is horrible asset management

I don't think buying out is always the best option, I'm sure there are quite a few teams that would rather completely clear off a players cap hit i.e. EDM with James Neal, Ottawa with Bobby Ryan etc and sometimes overpaying is the way to go, not as much as this trade suggests but, not super far off either

But looking at that trade, we’re giving up a second to unload Faksa. Hintz, Robertson, Stankoven… all picked in the second round recently. Can you imagine giving up a player like that just to move Faksa?? When you could have cleared roughly 66% of that cap hit with a buyout and kept that pick. Obviously never a sure thing, but our front office seems to have a nose for the second round

The player could also be Honka who was a first rounder, I'd trade him to clear up cap space. Teams trade picks all the time

The pick could also be Honka who was a 1st rounder, like you said it's not a sure thing and for a team going for the cup this year and in the near future an extra 1-2mil in non-dead cap can be huge
Dallas has Johnston, Dellandrea and Harley who are cheap for now but, will need raises and Oettinger who will arguably be the highest paid tendy in 2yrs time plus replacing Pavelski on the top line potentially and retooling the defense that is half aged. Heiskanen and Harley will need top4 quality D partners who will require payments, I can go on but, it's always tough to gauge and maintain for the future, you could be right but, especially since Dallas already has a pretty good prospect pool I'd risk some picks to improve the current situation
