Zegras would fit a Brunette offense

Description
In reading Trotz’s comments the other day about the state of the Preds, it sounded a lot like they will be transitioning to more what we know as ‘Brunnete offense’ than what we think of as a ‘Trotz offense’. This will take some remaking of the roster over next couple of years.

Switching from Hynes offense to a Brunette offense is something NJD fans know a little about.

In New Jersey, Hynes ran a scheme that held centers back in more defensive position and let wings run wild higher up the ice. He preached “triangles” in d-zone, basically using centers to clog up middle of ice. On the rush, it was straight lines into o-zone and centers would often be third man entering the zone. Once in the o-zone, he wanted the puck down deep and effective forechecking and puck retrieval to produce scoring chances. We saw paltry offensive output from the center position…Hischier, Hughes were constrained, Zajac was basically deployed as extra dman, Henrique ppg declined, Zacha’s development slowed. But we also saw some great years from wingers, Hall’s MVP year included.

We only had Brunette for one season, but he made clear changes to the system, which was built more fitting to our personnel. He emphasized speed, transition and puck possession through the neutral zone. There was a lot more east-west puck movement upon entering o-zone and very little dump-and-chase (outside the fourth line). Last year, Devils held the puck on their sticks more than any other team, which limited offensive chances against. Since they relied on handful of guys moving the puck from zone-to-zone, the possession players ended up producing a lot more, especially from center position.

A random list of guys I think would fit a Brunette offense…that are maybe available

Barzal
Verhaeghe
Bennett
Tatar
Schmaltz
Mangiapane
Garland
…and Zegras

Maybe I am way off, I don’t follow NSH day-to-day. But to me, it makes sense. Will leave it to others to fill in trade details.

He would fit but they probably couldn’t put together a good enough package to get him

I think they could…(1) they have a pretty good prospect pool; (2) if they are taking a new direction, they may be more willing to part with pieces they wouldn’t if they were ‘staying the course’

I guess but I don’t see it. If it becomes a true bidding war for Zegras Nashville gets outbid by a number of other teams pretty easily.

My view with any of these types of trades is that top-20 or top-25 prospects are always off-the-table. Just based on history, they are very rarely moved. Even for a guy like Zegras, I don’t think the Fantillis or Edvinssons are options. So if one team is offering a 26-50 prospect, a player, a pick or two…that is something NSH can easily keep up with.

Kemell, Wood, Tomasino and maybe Ufko all around the level of prospect we normally see move.

It absolutely makes sense imo, but the cost is going to be painful.

Anaheims organizational needs are RW and RD. If you've got a blue chip piece in that department as the main piece of a deal it's going to be more probable it gets Anaheims attention.

One of - Kemell, Wood, Tomasino
One of - Parssinen, Campbell, Evgangelista
One of - Fabbro, Ufko
One of - 2024 1st, 2025 1st
One of - 2025 TBL 1st, or later 2nd plus 3rd.

My back of the envelope deal.

RW = Kemell, Wood, Tomasino
RD = Carrier, Fabbro, Livingstone, Ufko

Loaded in both spots.

Nashville is probably the only team that can afford him, put together a good enough package, and has a logical need for him.

You greatly undervalue their prospect pool if you think they don't have the assets

Moving any combo of the 1st group + Evangelista would be painful imo. If we could avoid those 4 it would be ideal.

I don't think they would offer a package that large (5 pieces), maybe Fabbro+Askarov/forward prospect + a 1st + another pick (possibly a 1st depending on who they are giving up). On the other hand, I do think something like that is what would make it worthwhile for ANA to trade Zegras assuming that they don't have any issues at C with Carlsson/Strome/McTavish

If im nashville i just offer sheet him, 8,5 mil 2 years, a bit of an overpay sure and ANA dont wanna pay him that. also gives some security for signing the next deal as well. even if they match he hold arb rights for next deal and QO will be high so he can just walk himself to UFA unless they trade or pay him the bag.

They have Gibson with term and young Dostal in net, so Askarov may not be desired there as much as he would be elsewhere.

If I were Ducks, I would chose guys with windows that match Carlsson, McTavish, Mintyukov, etc. And I would pick pieces that may be on the outs stylistically and see if I could improve the return.

If Trotz is to be taken at his word and intends to build team into skilled, speedy possession team, that probably means guys like Tomasino, Kemell, Campbell are more likely to stay…and guys like Wood, L'Heureux, Schaefer are more likely to go.

Offer sheets are super rare, so probably low chance approach, but if someone were to OS him, that would be the way to do it.

2023-24: $5m bonus, $1m base
2024-25: $2m bonus, $2m base
2025-26: $0 bonus, $14m base

Sums up to $8m AAV over 3 years, but with poison pill QO at $14m after final year.

The way I see it is that of Anaheim is willing to move a piece like Zegras, they would be more willing to move Gibson, so having Dostal now and Askarov for the future. Trading Zegras would really set them back in their rebuild imo, unless Carlsson and Tavish are immediately replacing him.
