Probably for taking on highly overpaid fringe forward Joseph and the 3 years left on his contract.

OTT is definitely going to have to pay to dump Joseph however its not gonna cost them a first. Winnipeg is definitely not the team to make this kind of trade with either.

I'd recommend PHI and just do a 1for1 Joseph for Walker. To get a bottom to mid pairing RHD with similar contract.

Heh. How overpaid do you imagine he is? Take that amount and then subtract the 1M for useless pylon Stanley, and it's not adding up to a 1st.

nearly 3 million a year for 3 years is way too much money for Joseph. With the cap crunch that's still going on it probably does take a 1st especially since Stanley can be buried in the minors with no cap penalty. If someone plucks him off waivers it's not much of a loss if at all.

But how much too much? Minimum salary is 850K or whatever and he's certainly worth minimum. Either way, with the cap set to jump, 5-6M of dump shouldn't get a 1st. I mean, hey, maybe Ottawa re desperate dummies and pay it, but it would be a highly dumb thing to do.

Sounds good except that their contracts aren't similar. Joseph has 3 years left and Walker only has one. Joseph is younger, which should make him more appealing than Walker to Philadelphia, but unless Philadelphia thinks he's worth that contract, Ottawa would need to add a sweetener.

If Ottawa buries Stanley in the minors it gains them ~3 mil a year in cap space. That's 9 mil in total.

Read what I said again. It had nothing to do with Stanley.

Yeah you ignored that aspect of it but it is an option for Ottawa that needs to be taken into account. It's an option for Winnipeg if they keep him too.

I didn't ignore it, I eliminated it as a factor after you said they could bury him. I only subtracted the minimum salary Joseph is certainly worth from the 2.95 total. Like I said, Stanley is a non-issue in the comment in question.

Cap space is always a factor especially now.

Dude. I was merely explaining the math I used that did not include Stanley after your comment about them burying him with no penalty to clear up confusion. That's all. You keep trying to make it into a 9M dump, but that's simply not accurate.

You're just arguing semantics. You should take your own advice and read what I said. I never said Joseph was a 3 mil cap dump. In fact I didn't even use the word dump at all until right now in this response.

I simply said Joseph was highly overpaid then after you claimed Joseph is only "5-6M of dump" I pointed out that this deal would free up 3 million a year in cap space or 9 mil in total for Ottawa if they bury Stanley. Again I didn't use the word dump.

But since you insist on splitting hairs and arguing semantics here are the simple indisputable facts.

1. Joseph is a cap dump.
2. Joseph makes $2.95 million a year, close enough to $3 million to call it that.
3. Ottawa isn't retaining any of Joseph's salary. They're dumping his full salary.
4. Therefore Ottawa actually is dumping ~3 mil/year salary or ~9 mil in total salary.

The Senators don't need Stanley, unless Brannstrom or JBD is going the other way. Thomson will also be waiver eligible this season, although I could see him possibly going unclaimed.

A first is a fair ask for dumping Joseph right now, but I don't think the Senators will want to pay it. There are creative ways around opening up enough space to sign Pinto and roll with a 21 player roster. Especially if they can move one of Brannstrom or Kubalik without cap coming back. At that point, if they bury Joseph and Forsberg (temporarily), they can sign Pinto at 2.5M and ice a 21 player roster. If Norris is going to be LTIR eligible to start the season, it also makes it easier because they won't have to bury anybody until Norris is ready to return and they can run with a 23 player roster.
