This doesn't work for the Canes. Pesce's more valuable than Bennet, even with one year. It's why you're seeing the Skjei idea. It would have to be Bennett and a fair bit for Skjei

Skjei+ for Bennett is a more than fair base. Pesce+ for Bennett is quite an overpayment.

Except Florida has 900 LHD .... And while Skjei is solid, he's pending UFA. The LHD market is much more saturated than C. Pesce is more valuable but idk what a trade of Bennett and Pesce would look like exactly.

Pesce's more valuable. RD like Pesce are unicorns. The RD market is baron right now, and a top pairing RD like Pesce is going to need more than Bennett, a LOT more... it's like talking to a wall

Calls him a top pairing RHD but his metrics are subpar in the playoffs and he plays in an extremely sheltered defensive system. I hope he enjoys giving him a 7x7 tears of joy

And how many of those 900 LHD are truly top 4 dmen, or even potentially a top pairing guy? There is Forsling, but it’s a drop off after that. OEL is a question mark, probably will have enough success, but still feels like he should be sheltered a bit more. Mikkola, Rielly, Kulikov, and Mahura are all good, but they should be seeing almost entirely 3rd pairing action barring further injuries. I mean, with Ekblad and Montour out until, what, November or December (IDK the timeline) they have the RHD taken care of whenever they return. So when that happens, who gets forced onto the 3rd pairing for that right side if they go after Pesce? At least if they go for Skjei, they will have a legitimate top 4 guy, someone who can handle top pairing minutes as well, that would make their dcore a little less lopsided. As is, they will have to move at least one of their LHD to make room for Ekblad and Montour to return.

As for the valuation, Florida is likely desperate for a RD to be a stopgap. Pesce is more than a stopgap, and teams have to overpay when they become desperate (see Kuemper to Colorado as example). Add in that the RHD market is quite barren at the moment, and is certainly lacking in options as good as Pesce, a top pairing caliber dman, Bennett isn’t going to be nearly enough for the Canes to just let him go.

Neither was a 36 yr old Staal but it worked. They don't need a LHD. The Mikkola signing signals they'll be good with him pairing with Montour. So Skjei makes no sense. They can waive whomever is excess to bring back Montour when the time comes (they are fine as is with Ekblad coming back).

You are correct about the need on RD need but I think they would have signed one if they were concerned vs all the lefties they added. And yes, Pesce is not a stop gap but that's where the need is. So, if Bennett is a C that the Canes would ask about, Panthers ask about Pesce imo.

That doesn't make him a unicorn RD like caniac loves to call him. He's average. And not worth the 7m he apparently wants

That's literally what he is.

Pesce would leave Brindy's defensive system, go elsewhere to play in the 1RD role, and get exposed.

I mean Brindy's defensive system is good but it isn't that good... Pesce about plays 1RD minutes (22:01 TOI/G) already and he's very good defensive defensemen (even was before Brind'Amor)

He benefits from a system where he's equally deployed in usage amongst the top 4. He's a lot less involved in the defensive zone and contributes more on he transition and with zone denials. A product of the system; Carolina gets a lot of defense out of their forwards which also helps. He's also always paired with another borderline DFD and is never really responsible for bailing anyone out. He's in a "comfort zone"

In a system like Florida (or Toronto, because every leaf fan is enamored with Pesce for some reason) where he's asked to be a lot more active in the D zone bailing out more offensive D partners he'd quickly falter. This happens all the time when GM's give BIGGER workloads to defensive defenseman and think they can handle more than they can.

I'm not saying Pesce ISN'T good, but he's probably the most overrated dman on this website. And the fact that he want's north of 7m until he's 36/37.... yeah... Carolina can keep him.

I agree that giving him north of 7m until he's 36/37 is absolutely insane
