31 year old pending FA’s is basically the highest risk category of FA’s. You basically have to buy them out of FA and are likely to pay a premium to do it in terms of years.

Add in the rumors of clubhouse cancer and I doubt the package you get is better than Swayman. I’d gladly give up Ullmark instead, but I doubt there is a player in the league with an NMC that does t have Winnipeg on their list unless they have family in the area.

His defensive game is not good. Though it once was a lot better. As a scoring C though since he came into the league he ranks eighth in points (500) and goals (214), fifth in even-strength goals (152) and sixth in even-strength points (360) among centers.

He’s not overrated. He’s basically what you’d expect. The issue is buying him out of a free agency when cash is available when he’s 31 and the rumors of clubhouse cancer is tied around him even if you believe it is unfair.

I expect my 1C to be a leader that can play all situations and sets the bar for the rest of the team.
