You ain't trading Petey Very Angry
Why do the Leafs need Pettersson when you have Matthews and Marner.
Vancouver isn't interested in William Nylander because he didn't get 100 pts unlike Petey who got 102 last season.

The Leafs couldn’t offer anything to make the Canucks give up Pettersson. The only chance would be an extended Matthews for Pettersson+ but that wouldn’t happen

So what exactly is the incentive for the Canucks to do this? Not only do they complete bend over by giving you Pettersson for Nylander, they also have to take on 11 million dollar Tavares?

Get two PPG players. Tavares has $3M retained which so he comes as a PPG player at $8M

Also dump Garland and Myers which are two of the worst contracts in the NHL.

It's hard to argue that the Cancuks aren't a better team after this trade if you remove bias.

You just traded out Petterson (Likely about 100 points) and Garland (50 points) for Tavares (80 points) and Nylander (80 points).

That doesn't even consider saving $6M Myers who has negative on ice impacts and replacing him with Jarnkrok who would have been top 5 in goals on the canucks last year.

No, this is terrible for Vancouver. Absolutely atrocious. Canucks don't want anything to do with Tavares. They already have a JT Miller. Why would they want another 8 mil 30+ player on their roster? Nylander doesn't even come close to being as valuable as Pettersson is a 24 year old 100 point Selke level center. Canucks don't need Nylander who is a winger. This is simply terrible.

If you're using the Brock Boeser 55 points + Beauvillier 40 points = Marner 99 points

Would you do Boeser + Beauvillier for Marner? Of course you wouldn't

No cause it's a massive oversimplification doing two 3rd liners for a top 5 winger.

Very different from doing a top 15 winger, top 20 centers for a top 5 center.

And that is also an oversimplification. I wouldn't even have Tavares as a top 20 center. He is also 32 years old. Why in the world would the Vancouver Canucks want that? They are one of the younger teams in the league and have made it clear they want to get younger. Nylander is also a pending UFA. This UFA class is strong, why would they go ahead and trade a top 5 center in the league with team control just to get Nylander a year early? Makes absolutely no sense. The Leafs simply don't even have the assets to get Pettersson from Vancouver

By what metric is Tavares not a top-20 center?

He was 14th in points among centers, 16th in PPGs, 6th in Pts/60.

There is a stronger argument that he is a top 15 center than there is that he isn't a top 20 center.

And last season wasn't an exception. His worst season as a Leaf was 50 points in 56 games during the shortened Covid season. His biggest knock is his speed but he was never a fast player and has continued to be effective because his speed doesn't matter.

I completely disagree with the canucks trying to get younger. The have explicitly said they aren't rebuilding and want to be competitive. Like the Hronek trade doesn't help them get younger, it makes them older and likely adds a horrible contract to their books for the next 8 years. Same with the decision to keep Miller over Horvat or to sign Mikheyev or Cole, none of what the Canucks are doing is with the longterm in mind, its all to win today. And I just don't buy the argument that this trade doesn't instantly make the canucks better. I agree in 3 years they are WAY worse off but for next season they are ahead.

Points aren't everything. If you really want to go down that route, then JT Miller is a top 15 player in the league over the last 4 years. Miller had more points than Tavares as well. Would you consider JT Miller a top 15 or top 20 center?

Yes the Canucks are trying to get younger. The GM explicitly said they are trying to get younger. They may not be rebuilding, but they are retooling. Tell me how Hronek makes the Canucks older. He is literally 25 years old. How is that old? Saying an 8 year contract will age horribly for a guy who is currently 25 is pretty ironic since Nylander 8 year contract starting at 28 is more likely to age horribly. Come on now. Mikheyev was signed as a 27 year old. Ian Cole was given 1 year as a stop gap. If you don't know what you're talking about, you can just admit it, because you don't know what you're talking about.

Garland seems to be the trade option of the week. Leafs don't need a small overpaid non-physical forward, if they wanted that they would have re-signed Kerfoot.

I think Miller is horribly underrated and I'd struggle to name 20 Centers that I'd want more than him for next year.

The reason Detroit traded Hronek is because he refused to sign for less than Seider would make, (Google It). There is no other reason you trade a mid 20s top 4 D. Assuming he doesn't drop off in his contract year it think it's fair to say that you won't be happy when he's getting more than hughes or about the same in 12 months.

You are also looking at age without considering the way players age. Tavares is a high IQ player with good passing and shooting that's why he can be slow and still get a PPG. Mikheyev is a player whose only asset is his speed, he signed into his 30s and has an extensive injury history (most he's played in a season is 54 games). Signing him is the equivalent of signing a 38/39y old Tavares we can just play 50 games a year and put up 25-30 points cause that's just what you will get the next few years.

Same with Nylander he isn't a player who relies on speed so he will age well.

If you don't know how trading two draft picks for a 25y old makes you older I'd recommend learning how to count. Last I checked two 18y olds 7years younger than a 25y old.

How can Hronek refuse to sign for less than Seider? He wasn't even allowed to start contract negotiations yet. Do you know how the NHL works? There are rules. They didn't even have contract talks because they weren't even allowed. Also you said adding Hronek makes them older. Can you elaborate on that?

Mikheyev has already shown to be a very good complementary player to Pettersson and Kuzmenko putting up 14 goals in 46 games, on pace for 25. With great defense and PK ability, I don't think the Canucks will complain very much about him. Still don't need 30+ old Tavares when we can just have 24 year old Pettersson who still has 10+ years left of excellent hockey.

Also, no the team didn't get older because they traded draft picks for Hronek. That isn't how it works, those prospects were never even part of the organization. I also suggest you do some research. Where do you think that 1st round pick came from? It came from trading 28 year old Horvat for 25 year old Hronek, 25 year old Beauvillier, and 20 year old Raty.

I think you are the one who doesn't know how it work. You can negotiate you just can't sign? You think every RFA that resigns on July 1st with complex contract structures negotiated the deal in 20 minutes?

Literally found your own media talking about how Hronek's extension talks in Detroit were so **** Yzerman decided to just trade him (https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canucks-players-try-prove-steve-yzerman-wrong)

Also I literally work in the legal department for an NHL team so I can explain to you exactly how contract negotiations work and many deals are negotiated months before they are signed. It's only against the rules to negotiate with another team's players. The Canucks can already negotiate Hughes extension in 3 years from now if they wanted, it just can't be signed till 12 months before his current deal expires.

That's such a horrific oversimplification. Petterssons 2 way impact is a huge part of his game, which you're ignoring altogether, which neither Tavares or Nylander have. Also, Elias Pettersson is way younger then Tavares and Nylander, which is a huge part in itself. You wouldn't trade Matthews (100 point player) and Kampf (30 points) for Miller (80 point player) and Garland (50 point player)

“I work in legal department”

You realize that gives you no credibility right? You expect me to take your word for it because a stranger on the internet says they work for the nhl? I’m literally the prime minister of Canada buddy 😂
