I’d say that’s pretty fair. Petry is still a decent top 4 RD. He was just overpaid at 6.25 million. At 2.34 million he is an absolute bargain.

Why not take this a little further and try to pry Spencer Knight from them?

FLA has a couple of dmen starting the year injured so there’s a need here… and MTL is deep on D.

Could a package of Petry, 1st rd pick, and DeSmith for Knight be a doable trade?

FLA getting a 1st rd pick in this deal is also big because it gives them an asset to use at the deadline to make another acquisition for a playoff push since they don’t have a 1st rounder in ‘24.

The only thing that needs careful consideration is properly evaluating Knight to see if he is #1 caliber material. If you feel he is, you put a package like that together (definitely retaining salary on Petry, perhaps DeSmith too) and make the deal. If not, you scrap the idea.

I predicted the exact aav retention and compensation for Karlson. For petry I bet they get a conditional 3rd that moves to a 2nd for like 50+GP or something like that. And and additional late pick or low end prospect

This is an interesting take. I know Florida really likes him and is happy he is back. I think it would take a touch more than this to get Knight, but the thought is there for sure. Why not go for it?
