I don’t think you’re getting 2 2nds for a cap dump defenseman, a 4th liner, and the 4th best goalie on your depth chart who isn’t even waiver exempt.

You could argue this is a better return than the Karlsson trade because you’re offloading $6M+ of cap without retaining or taking on any bad contracts. Come on now.

Well Yzerman signed Holl to 3 year contract and over the past 2 off seasons he has yet to sign Petry. Honestly it's not going to happen and after being wrong all last off season I'd figure the group of Habs fans that keep posting this crap would get tired of being wrong.

THANK YOU!!!! It's highly unlikely that Detroit is going to use the last of their cap space on 3 players they neither want or need.

Add Caufield and Reinbacher and Yzerman may consider.

Wow, this is not even possible in a fantasy world.

If Steve wanted Petry he would be here already

I was just using this proposal to make a joke.

But, if it's not a $ issue, same CAP hit, I would definitely have Petry on my team over Holl.

I stiil like Petry. I don't like Holl. Maybe a change of scenery could/will benefit both of these guys. I guess we'll see.

I would accept with adjustments. Petry's contract is paid at 50% by the Canadian, which amounts to $2,300,000 for a number #3.4 defenceman capable of controlling the PP. Detroit should add (in addition to the 2 2nd round picks) either SEBASTIAN COSSA or Alexandre Doucet.

That is ridiculous as Petry over the last two trades has not gotten either the Habs or the Pens that kind of return. And if Wings wanted Petey he would be here without retention as Wings do not have cap issues

How can you say 'Steve' doesn't want Petry?

Of course he does.

Is this a realistic trade? No.

Its all $. Maybe he doesn't want him at what he was making, but Pittsburgh just ate 25% of his salary. I think the intention by Montreal is to eat another 25%.

You don't want Petry at half his salary eaten?

A lot of other teams would want Petry at half his salary gone.

Pittsburgh probably. Then again, I also don't think that they should be trying for a cup with 4 great players all above the age of 33 and garbage everywhere else.

I’m not sure what point you’re making here. Imo: Pittsburgh probably won the trade, albeit with risk associated with Karlsson.

Montreal did well, but not because they got Petry. They did well because they turned Hoffman (who sucks and is paid handsomely) and Rem Pitlick (who is cheap but mediocre) into more useful players (Petry, DeSmith, and a meh prospect). Basically they turned their trash with limited upside into some roster players that may be useful.

But you are over looking the fact that Petry has been on the trading for the last 2 off-seasons but only 1 team has traded for him and they have just traded him back to Montreal.

Were Montreal and Pittsburgh asking too much for him?

Do the 30 other teams know something that we don't?

Yzerman has had multiple chances to trade for him over the past 2 off-seasons and he hasn't. But in the past 2 off-seasons he has signed Maatta, Chiarot, Holl and Ghost.

i don't see the Wings making the playoffs this season and I think that is why Yzerman chose to fill out the roster with UFA signings. That way he saves draft capital and now he can let the prospects spend another year in Grand Rapids and play and learn to win as a team before making the jump to the NHL.

While Karlsson is freaking awesome in offensive, is defensive play is a nightmare. He's also not the most healthy player and carry is lot of injury over the years. It's only in 4 years we will be able to see if Dubas have done a good trade or not.

But nonetheless, I'm definitely interested into looking some Pittsburgh game to see if he would be able (Karlsson) to do better then with SJ as of now he's with better teammates in Crosby, Malkin, Letang, guentzel.

Yeah I don’t think 2 2nds for Petry, Evans, and Primeau all without retention is remotely close to the same value as Petry half retained for a 4th and a depth defenseman. Not sure this is a gotcha when the price is next to nothing with 2 years of retention.

It is when he adamantly denied Yzerman being interested in the last 2 off seasons. Price point was not the point... junior needed reminded he is not GMSY...
