Why would Anaheim do this. If Matthews is gonna leave Toronto, the Leafs won’t get back an elite young player. No team is gonna do that AND add two firsts.

Why would anyone want an expiring UFA without a contract extension by giving up an elite, proven player, two potential top 5-10 picks and two solid prospects? It makes no sense. If that said he came with a 8x13.25 extension then sure but without one makes no sense.

This doesn’t say there’s an extension in place. It doesn’t say he wants to stay in Anaheim and will negotiate once traded. So I’m not gonna assume anything. Normally on here people say extension in place because that adds to the value.

It's also just good asset management. Lets be honest here the ducks are not going to go on a deep playoff run right now while they are trying to get out of a rebuild. Why burn off several key prospects of one year of a great player with no commitment of retainment.
