-Jeff Carter was traded to the Pens on April 11, 2021. In that time, he's played 169 games for Pittsburgh and put up a 41-44-85 line - or, two points less than Nylander put up on his own in the 2022-23 season. Granlund had 5 points in 21 GP with the Pens after the trade, is 31 years old, and still has 2x$5M left on his deal. The Granlund trade was ripped apart when Hextall made it in March, and that was when Granlund still looked like a 50ish point guy. Basically, this is Toronto giving up the (by far) best player in the deal to get back two veterans on the wrong side of the aging curve, plus a pair of picks 2 and 3 drafts away. This is less like "4 quarters for a dollar" and more "a couple nickels and some lint for a dollar."
-Islanders would not make this trade. Brodie makes double the AAV that Romanov does, has less term, and is a decade older than him. Again - Brodie is still good but is on the wrong side of the aging curve, while Romanov improved across the board from his 2021-22 numbers and is clearly on the upswing. Adding a bottom-6 guy like Holmberg doesn't really move the needle here - and that's before you get to the point that the Isles literally don't have the cap space to absorb the extra $3.3M in AAV you're sending them here.
