They wont give us Pulock

With Nylander getting an extension in this trade, this has to be pretty close to being fair, IF the isles want a scoring winger in Nylander. I’ve been thinking of either that trade, or swapping out Pulock for Dobson. It would make sense, especially since they locked Mayfield down for 7 years.

Anaheim instantly declines. The difference between those two picks last month was 8 slots, and in 2024 it could well be less. We might do this for a third. You should just buy Murray out and forego the Timmins-Zadorov trade.

I hope we can trade Murray. I don't love the 2m cap hit on the buyout for the Leaf's next year. We need all the cap we can get over the next few years while we compete. Maybe have the trade with Anaheim as "if Toronto pick is between 11 and 22, Leaf's receive the better of Anaheim's 2, 2nd round picks. If the pick is between 23 and 32, Leaf's receive the worse of Anaheim's 2, 2nd round picks".

Would that make you adjust your opinion on the trade?

It certainly might.

Here's my philosophical take on this situation. I think that the concern about the $2 million hangover is overblown. It becomes almost moot if the cap rises by $2 million or more, but let's discount that possibility because it's speculative. You'll have Brodie coming off the books next season (maybe even earlier) and Bertuzzi, Domi and Klingberg were all signed to one-season deals; if just one of them doesn't work out, there's your cap space right there. Moreover, cap space is going to be a consideration if and only if you guys will really, really want to re-sign both Matthews and Nylander and both of them are still interested in staying -- not at all guaranteed. I say solve the problem you definitely have right now rather than make perhaps entirely unnecessary accommodations for a future problem that may not arise.
