Karlsson Deal

Description
Now that the Debrincat trade is done and likely all UFAs are signed just having some fun with an idea since the rest of the offseason for Detroit is likely very boring.

I estimate we will need about 20M for extensions of the core RFA's next season or possibly 24M if they don't bridge Raymond. I'm this scenario we have over 28M, should be enough to fill out the roster considering all the entry level contracts we likely have coming up.

I'm sure this isn't even an option for Yzerman and Detroit but it's always nice to add extra picks for the future.

  1. Karlsson, Erik (2 875 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Assuming Karlsson waives to go to Pittsburgh and assuming San Jose will retain 25% of his salary.

The team could really be any other team interested in him that he would waive to, not sure how many of those there are.

Détails additionnels:
Petry is strictly for cap purposes and holds zero value in this trade.

Pickering, Blomqvist and the 2024 1st go to San Jose.

Petry, the 2025 2nd and the 2026 2nd go to Detroit.

Pittsburgh's 2024 1st is top 10 Protected.

  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2025 (BOS)
  3. Choix de 5e ronde en 2026 (DET)
Détails additionnels:
Detroit retails an additional 20% on Karlsson's contract.

Since Pittsburgh does have a empty cupboard, Detroit swaps a couple late picks for the 2nds.

DET
Since Petry won't waive for San Jose and they need to take money back in this cap world we live in, Detroit send Chiarot. Less cap but one year more term. He can fill the void left by Karlsson for now since he can play both sides and honestly seems to play better in the right side, at least he did for us last year.

I like the idea for sure. I feel like it makes sense. I just dont know if we need to send 2 2nds to move Petry when youre moving a 4th and 5th to move Chiarot.

EDIT: Didnt take into account you were retaining, sorry.

Petry is maybe a million overpaid. Chiarot is $3m overpaid for a year longer. I'd rather no deal at all if this were the cost.

They have to take cap back, only way they can move him. Petry won't waive to the Sharks. Don't see them including Granlund and keeping Petry to be a third pairing guy at his cap.

This is interesting. I can see San Jose not liking having to bring Chiarot back in the trade, but maybe Pittsburgh throwing in a POJ or rights to Ty Smith gets it over the edge. Someone has to concede and now with EK65 requesting the trade its more than likely going to be SJS.

I can see Petry waiving his NMC to go to Detroit, and Detroit being happy to take that contract if it means moving Chiarot. Pens get EK65. SJS gets a lot in terms of future, but has to eat the Chairot deal.

    Overall could see it happening

They have to eat bad money either way. Chiarot is a placeholder until their prospects take over and is all someone that can protect them. He's not as overpaid as some people think. I really don't like him and I think he's only 1M overpaid. Sharks would be taking Petry who is more money for one less year, but since he won't waive to go there they settle on Chiarot.

I also believe San Jose need to make a move this summer since you never know what next year will look like, sell at his highest point.

I mean San Jose pretty much has to now that EK65 has formally requested. EK having a full NMC means he chooses his destination and that minimizes return because the player has full control on where he goes. If only wants to go to one team then that one team has the power along with Karlsson.

Everywhere I'm hearing someone has to make a concession when it comes to this trade and with the way events unfolded it is sounding like San Jose is the one that's going to have to make this concession.

I agree. I think we teams make a concession here. Pittsburgh is emptying their already empty cupboard more to go for it. San Jose is eating Chiarot, who isn't great but it's still serviceable and 2.875M for the next four years. Detroit is retaining 2.3M for 4 years plus 6.25M, although I consider him an upgrade over Ben, but move out 2.45M in year 3 and basically extend it to a fourth year.

The only thing from Detroit's side that could throw a monkey wrench is Raymond and Seider's new deals and what they will require. That possibly could be what keeps Detroit out of this convo.

More than enough for them, made sure if it. I expect anywhere between 20-25M for all the RFA's.

In that case I see no reason for Detroit not to acquire a couple 2nd rounders for this
