Ottawa lost on Debrincat explained

Créé par: Spaceman
Équipe: 2023-24 Sénateurs d'Ottawa

Description
Ottawa trades the 7th overall pick in 2022, 39th overall pick 2022 and a 3rd round pick in 2024 in exchange for Dominik Kubalik, Donavan Sebrango, a 2024 conditional 1st (likely around mid 20's) a 2024 4th round pick and 27 goals during the 2022-2023 season which didn't put you over the top to get into the playoffs.

That's called bad asset management.

A reminder you also did not get Berggren which was apparently a must have / deal breaker in any deal for cat according to every Sens fan.

Yeah no crap they lost on the deal... They got screwed over. They were hoping to sign Debrincat long term, instead he wanted to play for his hometown team and he was an RFA so he had a say in where he wanted to go. Ottawa made good out of a bad situation. It wasn't the best trade but at least they still got assets for him

Is this even really a debate? Even Dorion himself was saying on radio earlier today that the return was marginal.

I mean anyone saying they didn't lose is coping, but given that DeBrincat only wanted to go to Detroit, Dorion did fine, dare I say good.

Small market Canadian teams should really do their homework on American players before giving up hauls to acquire them. Chances are they / or their American girlfriends/wives don't wanna live long term in Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg.

Now this doesn't change the fact that he should've never traded for DeBrincat, but looking at it from a vacuum he did well.

You do know that our captain, Tkachuk, is American right? Well, dual national who chooses to represent the US as he's spent most of his life there. Signed long-term. Norris had no issues signing long-term and he's even from Michigan! Guess he preferred Ottawa.

Have fun with that non-existent 6th OA that y'all wasted on Zadina, for which you got nothing for. smile

My most recent asking price was ...

Berggren
Boston's 1st
Maybe a 2nd

vs

Kubalik
Likely Boston's 1st
Sebrango
A 4th

Value-wise, I wasn't that far off from what Yzerman actually paid.

But compared to the first trade with Chicago, yes, Ottawa lost to Detroit.

We also got a first and a player who only scored 7 fewer goals than DeBrincat last season from Yzerman.

It is what it is.

Time to move on.

Happy that you brought up Zadina. Allows me to bring up Tyler Boucher. Who Ottawa used the 10th overall pick on in 2021 when far superior prospects were available. My god, he's not even a ppg player in the OHL as a 20 year old. As a 20 year old!?! In a re-draft the guy would be a 7th round pick. At least Zadina was good enough to make the NHL despite not fulfilling potential. Boucher won't even make the NHL even to be critisized for not making an impact there. Hahaha a Pierre Dorion drafting masterclass. Zadina was a Holland pick. That dinosaur is Edmonton's problem now.

There’s no way that pick is mid 20s . It’ll likely be top 20 very very easily maybe around 15.

It wasn’t a terrible return but it wasn’t a win. It’s like acceptable ish depending what other signings they make

You think Boston will miss the playoffs? They won’t win 65 games again. But miss the playoffs? C’mon.

Detroit’s own pick will likely be in the 10-15 range. Bostons will be in the 20-25 range most likely. Remember Detroit keeps the better pick. Only way this favours the Sens is if both Detroit and Boston completely crap out next year and both finish in the bottom 10. It won’t happen.

Well I think the Detroit pick is very likely top 20 so they’ll keep that. I think Boston is 50/50 to make the playoffs depending what happens to their centre core but even if they barely make it , they won’t win 2 rounds so that pick will still be top 20

Their best centermen currently under contract are Pavel Zacha and Charlie Coyle.

And they don't have a lot of assets or cap space to make changes.

They very well might.

Until Patrice Bergeron officially announces his retirement. I'm not writing off the Boston Bruins. Even without him I think they're a wildcard team. With him they're top 3 in the Atlantic easy.

I remember when you people all thought Detroit would just get DeBrincat for free as a UFA.

Including the OP.

And if Detroit did trade for DeBrincat, we would barely get any scraps, let alone a 1st round pick.

Good times.

TB's role isn't elite goal scoring. It's physical play. They said it when they drafted him. He's a player who may not turn out. We'll see. Don't really care.

Zadina may have been a Holland pick, but it's the almighty Stevie Y who signed him to a 3 year, 5.5m deal. Guess Stevie liked what he saw at the time.

Anyways, I'm done feeding the troll. Enjoy your 5'7 winger. We'll be sure to keep Brannstrom around so Cat has someone his size to fight. That is, if he's actually still willing to. As we saw last February, we know what happens when Red Wings are expected to play with grit and challenged.

In any case, they aren't winning the President's Trophy again and they aren't making the 2024 ECF.

That pick will be #24 or higher guaranteed.

90% of the trades by Detroit fans always included either a 1st (BOS) or two 2nd round picks going to Ottawa. And yea, if Ottawa declined that and decided to keep Cat for 1 more year. He would have hit the open market next summer as a UFA. Maybe Ottawa would get some better return for him at the TDL from some other team. But Cat made it clear. he was going to Detroit. either this season or next season. Steve Y decided he didn't want to wait and to get him locked up as a RFA, which makes sense as we'll get a better deal cap wise. I'm fine with the package we gave up for Cat.

Those two Ottawa games are part of the reason Steve Y brought in Klim Kostin. If Tkachuk wants to keep running his mouth (which he will) Detroit now has a brute to shut it for him.

Tkachuk will only run his mouth when there's no one his size on the opposing team. At heart; he's a coward just like his father. If we have Rasmussen or Soderblom in the lineup he'll be as meek as a kitten, trust me.

You don't care that your 10th overall pick isn't going to even make the NHL? I smell a tinge of butthurt in that comment.

Hilarious that YOU brought up Zadina in a poor attempt to troll me but when I pointed out that Ottawa has made even dumber 1st round draft blunders, suddenly I'm just a troll that your done feeding.
