The argument that Detroit will just get DeBrincat for free is looking very shaky

Détails additionnels:
---- Ottawa and Detroit have some trade ready to go over DeBrincat in a sign-and-trade arrangement.

---- We have given Detroit permission to negotiate a contract extension with DeBrincat.

---- DeBrincat wants an 8 year Timo Meier-like extension

---- Yzerman only wants to give out a 5 year extension at an AAV somewhere between 7 and 8 million.

---- As a result, there's an impasse between Yzerman and DeBrincat.

Détails additionnels:
The question I have is this:

If DeBrincat can't agree on an extension with Detroit right now, why would next year be any different?

What difference would it make if he was a UFA?

The argument that Detroit will just get DeBrincat for free is looking very shaky right now.

IMO, it is nothing more than a worn out talking point that is making less sense by the day.

Debrincat is the new Dubois. Every wings fans think they could get him for cheap or free while he will get traded elsewhere for a lot. In my mind, any offer for him should start with an unprotected first, an A prospect (Kasper, Edvinsson, Danielson, ASP) and a roster player (Kubalik, Fabbri).

Because most people go to an AGM just to look at the trades and nothing else.

& why is DeBrincat worth more than what Dubois returned if they’re in the exact same situation?

And that’s way too much for debrincat. If that’s the asking price they can keep him.

"Why does DeBrincat fetch more than what he was traded for" is a better question.

Not every wings fan thinks that way . I'm more than willing to send pieces but guys like Kasper and Edvinsson you know aren't gonna happen but people who think kubalik and a 2nd will do it are delusional. There's a middle ground there somewhere for a 1st and a guy like Berggren as a pretty decent starting point.

Actually a really simple answer. Ottawa traded for him with no guarantee beyond that single year since he was an RFA with arbitration rights and a QO of $9M. But here Detroit is getting a 2x 40 goal scorer on a 5 year deal at what WOULD BE (won't happen) an absolute bargain hit as soon as the cap goes up next season.

I mean he was not a 40G scorer last year. If you want to bring a non-existent extension into play, you should give more weight to his more recent 27G season.

Debrincat is a 40 goal top line scorer. Why would they let him go for less than what they paid for

Because they don't really have a choice.
Either he gets paid more to a team that can extend him (limited list), or he fetches a rental price.

Detroit own first and Berggren is a very good starting point. Add another B prospect and Fabbri and they probably accept

Winnipeg didn’t have a choice for Dubois and they still got a heck of a return. Maybe what I said is exaggerate, but it’s not very far

we should definitely base this trade off a trade that everyone thinks is a horrible trade by LA that includes a 6'2/3" CENTER.

Same situation. Different return. You won’t get Debrincat for Berggren + late first. It takes a good asset

Then I doubt Yzerman even entertains the offer lol. Ottawa should be lucky to even see half of what they paid.

That’s fine. Ottawa needs to trade him more than Detroit needs to trade for him. This talk of a 1st plus guys like edvinsson or kasper is just not going to happen. A 1st berggeren and kubalik/fabbri is the absolute max they should go and even then I wouldn’t be happy with giving up berggeren.

Why would Yzerman trade premium assets for a player that he can't come to a contract agreement with? That's just nonsensical.
A more appropriate title would probably be "Looks like Debrincat to Detroit is very shaky."

If he were 30 years old or coming off a major injury I'd agree with you. But he's only 25, has 3 seasons with over 30 goals and two with over 40, and on what everyone is calling a "down year" he scored 27 goals and had 66 points.

1. I never said Yzerman would.

2. There are some folks who think Ottawa will just give 9 million to DeBrincat and then Detroit freely signs him as a UFA 1 year later.

The title doesn't need to be changed.

1. Yet you're here making this trade with the usual Ottawa template of 1st + Berggren.
2. To be fair, there are idiots that think idiotic things everywhere. They're probably not worth giving time to. Ottawa doesn't have 9 mil in cap space, and still has a couple roster spots to fill. Dorion literally can't sign DeBrincat for 1 year, so that notion, wherever it's coming from, is moot.
3. Indeed, the title doesn't NEED to be changed. But I still think it's more appropriate either way.
