No one wants to live out here

Description
Remove the GM, remove the toxic atmosphere that has plagued this team for years and build around guys who want to play here.

Is this team good enough to make playoffs? No.
Is this team bad enough to finish bottom 5? Unlikely.
Is this team good enough to put up a hard fight but likely fall in the bottom 10 for a great pick to help build the future? Yes

Feel free to pull me apart but I think the Jets are headed for a massive retool/rebuild as all their upcoming UFA/RFA stars don't want to return.

  1. Newhook, Alex [Droits de RFA]
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
Late first back and young center who hasn't found his grove just yet. Very underwhelming value, but when your stars say they don't want to play their anymore, it's tough to get value
COL
  1. Scheifele, Mark (3 000 000 $ retained)
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (WPG)
Détails additionnels:
Aves get their second line center for another deep push. Salary is half in order to make cap work. 3rd round pick helps with offset of cost. Does not come with extension

  1. Luukkonen, Ukko-Pekka
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (BUF)
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (BUF)
Détails additionnels:
Jets are unable to get the 2023 first from Buffalo, and settle with a 2nd in this years draft, a top 5 protected 1st in next years draft and a goalie who will likely play third string.
BUF
  1. Hellebuyck, Connor
Détails additionnels:
Helly goes home to Buffalo a year early as Buffalo begins it's attack on the Atlantic. Will be a great mentor for Levi as well moving forward. Extension can be in place. Depends on what Buffalo wants or values Helly at.

Jets shed ex captain for likely number one center for a season or two. Will likely struggle under expectations but again, all about the return here.
PIT
  1. Wheeler, Blake (4 125 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Dubas helps out his team by getting a better point producer, at a cheaper cap hit, with less term for just a small pick swap. Enjoy the toxic lifestyle

WPG

  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (FLA)
  3. Choix de 4e ronde en 2023 (MTL)
Détails additionnels:
Small returns for someone who never wanted to be a Jet. Shame
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [Droits de RFA]
Détails additionnels:
Again, way undervalue for what PLD would likely get, but he has all but made it clear it will be Montreal and no where else. Montreal can in theory wait a year, but they shed some cap, give up pick 31st in the draft and have their number 2 center for years to come.

PLD has a list of 5-6 teams he would sign with. MTL isn't the only team he'll sign with. So we don't have the leverage we used to. We have some. But not as much anymore

Read about it yesterday, I don't know if I believe him. I still feel like he is bound for Montreal even if he gets traded somewhere else next year.

That's definitely an interesting Pens trade. If they decide that they don't want to buyout Granlund and waste cap space - I'd definitely take this over keeping Granlund or giving up assets to dump him.

I think MTL is the TEAM he want's to be on. But I believe that there's a few contending teams he would want to play for

You would be correct. He's a place holder until someone like Perfetti or Lambert could take over.

I think it helps both teams. Jets would desperately need someone with NHL center experience while the Pens lose some cap and get someone who is hungry to win one more time.

Yeah that's fair, I bet in his perfect world, he gets traded this year to a contending team, wins a cup, then goes to UFA and signs a 7 year deal with Montreal lol

I feel like MTL is the only team that he would do 8 years with, or sign shorter elsewhere in assumption the cap jumps up in a couple years and he gets a bigger payday.

You're right. " No one wants to live out here". At my national company's place of work....no one wanted to transfer to Winnipeg, heck people didn't even want to accept a promotion if it meant living in Winnipeg.
Bad enough is the Winnipeg weather, and the "isolation" from other major cities, the Jets are no more than just a middling team. Jets might have the second worse travel schedule in the NHL. Yeah, the have to rebuild and hopefully for them they can some nice returns for their upcoming UFAs.

If I were PLD I would asked to be traded to a contender and sign a 3 year deal and try to win a cup. And by then end of those 3 years sign in MTL as a UFA in hopes that they're ready to compete

Avs would prefer to move nhl-ready prospects or more draft capital rather than newhook if possible. Newhook is a strong 3C that can transition to 2C in '24, recognizing that the Avs likely cannot resign Scheifele in '24.

If the Jets trade Wheeler they would want to clear cap space, so they wouldn't retain and take a worse contract back..

With Dubois willing to extend with 5 or 6 teams, it's extremely unlikely the Jets have to take back a cap dump. They may take back cap, but it will be useful cap not cap dumps/dead cap (Hoffman, Dvorak, Anderson) unless the are paid extra to take them.

That deal would easily be beat even by teams trading for PLD for only one year.

For sure - I'm actually surprised the Jets would even be interested really. But like you said if they desperately need someone to play center then maybe they would. In a vacuum I think the trade definitely favors the Pens and would be an easy yes - Wheeler is cheaper, better, and signed for only one more year. It's just...... would the Pens rather buyout Granlund and use that 4.1mil towards a younger winger instead? Maybe. That's the only hesitation I see. Do they want another 37 year old, who while better than Granlund, could drop off at any moment.

I think you’re heavily underestimating how dire this situation is. The Jets are no longer competing for the cup. They’re going to be sellers and are going take what they think the best deal is.

Wheeler is a locker room cancer is should be moved for anything possible. Take a look back at Patches trade from Vegas this year, high cap, high scorer, traded for a low level prospect.

I believe their are teams that would easily beat the PLD deal, but I would argue that it would be hard to get that value when PLD says he’s only playing the one year with that team then messing off to Montreal as a UFA. I have never been so sure of a player going somewhere than I am PLD signing with Montreal.

That’s a fair argument, the though is Land being out all year, this helps them push for the cup again, rather than waiting a full year for Newhook to possible develop and missing an entire year of Land

Avs will likely be in on PLD (if he'll sign) but not Scheifele. And if they are in on PLD, I think they can beat what you have coming from the Habs.

It just doesn'tmake sense to retain that muchon Wheeler and take back a far worse contract. They could just buy him out instead of taking on dead cap. Unless Pittsburg wants to pay them for taking on that extra year of dead cap.

It might be your feeling on PLD, but it doesn't jive with reality and the facts we have. Your offer basically has Montreal paying the 1st it would cost to dump Hoffman meaning you expect to get PLD for a 4th, which is completely unrealistic. Considering a couple months of lesser players are the TDL routinely get more. It just wouldn't be competitive at all.

100%, but them sticking with Chevy tells me they won't go down that road... Dubois wants out, Hellebuyck won't extend, Scheifele and Wheeler are both rumored to be done, how can you not look at this situation and come to the conclusion that a rebuild is the best scenario?

It would be a dream scenerio for a new GM, lots of quality pieces to sell... unfortunately Chevy cannot go there.

I'd imagine any team trading for him would either want a sign and trade, or have already negotiated some sort of longer term extension with him. Trading the assets for a plyer without knowing what the contract will look like would be shooting themselves in the foot, especially with all of the chatter the past year of him wanting to be in Montreal.

On the other side of that it behooves PLD to be open to more than just 1 team. If he handcuffs everyone and says he'll only play for the Habs, Hughes can very easily lowball him on his contract demands and say well if you want to be a Hab this is what you'll have to take, or what you'll need to leave on the table to be here. Opening it up to more teams means he has a better chance of getting the contract he wants even if it's with Montreal.

Too short sighted, too many Schefifle issues to give a good character 3c rfa center for.

Thats the point, welcome to the NHL where your team doesn't win every trade you post here.

These are trades that are much more likely, as players have now come out and stated they will not be returning. It's part of the business world, when someone isn't returning, their value is lowered
