Flames accept. Not sure where we will find the cap room, but we will make it happen. It might be more prudent to take Mangiapane though. He has a higher AAV but last season was an anomaly compared to his average S% which is quite high.

BUF says yes, CGY says yes, (but dont have the cap),

but maybe its me but the third deal just seems to be a clear out: Hollowell is a 24-5 yr old quality AHLer but its only his rights, Abrueze might become a bottom 6 nhler but probably not and its only his rights, and SDA has already left North America and gone back to Russia, and its only his rights.....for a 25 yr old Nylander who is a perenial disappointment across three teams, in the nhl/ahl since 2016, to not even be on the NHL squad?

Last year was the norm for Mangiapane, it's the most shots he has ever taken so the percentage was driven down but in terms of production, that was the norm, the year before was the outlier. It was also far and away the highest percentage of OZone starts he's ever had in his career and it lead to career average numbers as opposed to career highs. He's a 20 goal, 40 point guy that's on too big of a contract for his production with UFA rights coming up, his value is not as high as Flames fans want it to be.

I don't think Mangiapane is a ppg top line winger by any means , but his career shooting % is 15.8 which is well above league average. (Not including his 2017 where he only played 10 games as a rookie)

2018 12.3%
2019 15.6%
2020 19.8%
2021 18.9%
2022 9.3%

Despite last year his GSVA didn't fall completely off the charts (granted it is a rolling 3 year weighted regression so his first two years aren't relevant):

GSVA 1.4
Off: 11.5
Def: 1.4
Usage adjustment: -1.9

We can speculate on why most of the team saw a drastic reduction in production last year, but the common thread was Sutter's adherence to high perimeter shot volumes.

I don't overvalue Mangiapane, but I think he would light it up on a team with better playmakers and depth at C.

We could make space for that deal. The trick would be convincing him to resign. I'd suggest doing it during stampede when the drinks are flowing.

Make space how? We're talking about like 7M cap here

It's only 3.6MM difference. We could trade Tanev, Toffoli, Coleman, Mangiapane, or/and Vladar and open up spots for some of the kids. We should probably move some of them anyway. Had we actually sold at the deadline, we would actually have draft capital heading into June 28th. Poile was foresighted enough to see the writing on the wall. It's baffling how the flames actually thought this team could make the playoffs (let alone go anywhere once there).

Marner is better than anyone on our Team. You don't pass that up (especially at that cost).

You are not factoring in that Calgary already needs to move out cap to full out their roster as well as another roster spot needs to be filled, ideally not by league min scrubs

Mang and Hanifin for Marner. Flames go up $150k in cap, so $1.1m in cap space without filling out the roster. Trade Vladar and probably one of Toffoli or Tanev to clear $6m+ and the Flames could make this work. Not a fan of two $10m+ contracts, but hard to turn down a player like Marner.

I'm considering that as well. Having 3 ELC forwards would be prudent to lower our cap hit this year. Buying out Rooney saves a bit of cap. We could easily move Toffoli, Tanev Hanifin or Vladar to clear cap space. Not that it matters because Toronto isn't giving up Marner for that little.

I agree. Calgary has depth, but no concentration of talent at any given position.

I personally think he is due to be Blake Coleman with maybe 5-10 more assists per year. He's good enough but a middle six winger with some upside. If we look at all his career averages, his career year was the outlier and I think it will remain the outlier, unfortunately just a contract year.

I hope I'm wrong too! I think Marner remains a Leaf long beyond Nylander, Matthews, Tavares. Hanifin and Dube are good trade pieces but I'm not as high on moving on from Dube as he, Coronato, Ruzicka and Pelletier are the only current roster guys with expiring RFA deals everyone else is a UFA when their contract is up. Flames need some sort of roster certainty past 2024!

Calgary has always been so preoccupied with making the playoffs that they never stopped to think what they will do when they actually get there. We wouldn't be in this situation if ownership had just let them sell off some of these UFAs at the deadline. The team clearly wasn't capable of a deep run, yet they "stood pat" and now have no draft capital heading into a deep draft. It wouldn't be the worst thing for them to clean house for a year or two like Dallas, St Louis and Nashville have done.
