I don't think the playing time is the thing for Carter: I doubt he wants to pick up and move his family again. Petry also has the 15 team NTC, and I woouldn't be surprised if Chicago was on it.

And the Pens decline anyway. Petry is still a fine 2nd pairing defenseman, and the 14OA shouldn't be used unless it's to get a significant impact player. Murphy is good, but not that.

If the Canucks pay to get rid of Garland I am going to lose my mind. The organization is a total joke. Garland is not a negative asset and if it costs to move him then move someone else.

Carter and Petry aren't waiving for that dump.

And Vanvouver giving up the 11th overall pick to move Conor Garland is totally delusional.

Canucks easily decline. We're not paying to dump Garland, he's not a cap dump.

Can’t see the logic behind a good player like Garland who isn’t even on an unreasonable contract as a cap dump

I will disagree with the other Canucks fans here, I actually think this is a reasonable offer. Vancouver has been trying to move Garland for some time and has recently inquired into the cost to move the player. Dropping 8 spots in a deep draft may be worth it, depending on whos left on the draft board at 11.

Garland is a good player but in a cap league that doesn't mean much if they are an overpaid player, and Garland is overpaid by about 1M per year. Add the Canucks cap situation and I don't think this is an unreasonable offer at all.

Is Garland overpaid? I think not. 5 mil for 50 points playing with below average linemates is pretty impressive given his limited ice time and PP oppertunity. He is a machine at even strength and is our 3rd best defensive forward behind Petey and Mikheyev. Not sure where this "bad contract" hoax came from as he was listed as one of the best value contracts in the league last year according to several analytical models

If he wasn't overpaid he would have already been moved since the team has been shopping him for months. Drance was breaking down the contract awhile back on his Sportsnet show and figured Garland is more a 4M player, his logic behind the breakdown seemed reasonable to me.

      1. There’s already rumors they wanna do it

      2. If you actually read the trade, you would see they aren’t “giving up the 11th pick.” They’re moving back 8 spots. Huge difference

I think it’s less about him being overpaid, and more of teams having no cap space. He isn’t on a bad contract, but he isn’t on a bargain either. Teams try to acquire the best value contracts making the ok ones still hard to move.

Sure, but if there are bargain contracts to be had then an okay contract is going to sit, and if you want to move it then its going to cost. There will probably be a time over the duration of Garland's contract where a team will be willing to take him for free or even pay an asset (assuming he continues to preform at his current level of play) based on what's available in the market. That said this team wants cap space now and to get it by moving Garland they may have to pay.
