Put my in the camp, of Marner is NOTa trade material for a poor team with cap.....CBJ in this case. CBJ can sign UFA(s) for the price of Marner and not give up those two picks. This kinda reminds of the disastrous DeBrincat to Ottawa trade. Ottawa gave up good assets....just to finish out of the playoffs, and looks like DeBrincat is headed to UFA.

This is just straight up 🤮 for Columbus, terrible move for the Jackets, hopefully Jarmo would never do something that bad as their GM.

Marners close proximity to UFA, high cap hit and clear desire to only be a Leaf will lower his trade value by quite a bit.

Not saying he's worthless but he isn't getting multiple 1sts and A-prospects.

You're right. There is a big difference in "trade value". and "value on the ice". Yeah the trade is good for CBJ for immediate on ice value....but trade value? Giving up picks for the 7th highest paid player in the league? I don't feel Marner is the 7th best player in the league

So the Jackets are giving up 3 of their top 4 prospects from a top 3 pool and two more 1sts for 2 years of Marner. It's actually ludicrous how undervalued the Jackets' prospects are by Canadian hockey fans.

Two of those pieces is probably fair, maybe even with retention. But Jiricek shouldn’t be discussed here. He is a top-10 if not top-5 prospect….those guys never get traded.

Ya’ll clearly never read the full trade. Its 2 conditional first round picks, and with a high probability that CBJ retains these two 1st round picks. Realistically, it is the 3 prospects, 2024 and 2025 2nd round picks, and a guarenteed 2026 first if the 2024 or 2025 1st rounders do not go back to the Leafs.

You are also forgetting that prospects are magic beans. You dont know if Marchenko will get past 21 goals. You dont know if Jiricek is gonna be a top defender like hes projected, and you certainly dont know if Dumais is gonna be a full time NHL’er. Yet with Marner, you get somebody who is established, and you still keep your 2023 1st rounder, and possibly your next 2024 and 2025 firsts as well.

Bit we do know that Marner is gonna in 2 years and that CBJ aren't winning a cup in that time, maybe even making playoffs, so what's the point? "Bah magic beans" all you want. There's a big difference between magic beans, and a top 3 prospect pool full of guys who are extremely highly touted, have shown growth, ect. Yeah, some of the prospects in the system will disappoint, but only an incompetent GM would completely blow up their rebuild on the basis that prospects are magic beans.

Oh ****, you're totally right. Guess the Jackets should actually be giving up Mateychuk, Johnson, Sillinger, their 3rd OA, and any other player under 22 just to get Marner. What's the point in holding all these magic beans when they can get another ****ing redundant winger?
