An argument against Marner and Nylander

Description
If we are trading a long-term cornerstone piece for a year of Nylander or two years of Marner, we would be making a mistake. Many of the trades I have seen assume NJ’s window is closing. It’s not.

- We had the youngest team in playoffs this year
- And the youngest team in 2nd round in half a decade.
- We have the top prospect pool in the league.
- And most of our core are in low-to-mid 20s

Do not derail a good thing for an off-season sugar high.

Here is a Blackwood trade to chew on instead.

Unless you're front loading that Meier contract with $14 million for the first couple seasons, he'd say no.

I mean, if Meier really wants to stay here (and he's an RFA so he has less leverage), the thing that the GM can ask him is, over the next 8 years, does he deserve to make more money than Jack Hughes? After disappearing in the playoffs and never having a season statistically comparable to the one Hughes just had, I don't think he deserves to say yes to that

If Meier or Bratt won't sign maybe there is a deal there but you don't really need to do anything if they do

I was going to play with an idea that was almost this. Except Tatar. Maybe swap Sharg or trade him for stuff and sign 1-2 good bottom 6

What’s your plan for Sevs and blocking Nemec in a year? Shift him to LD? Or make him trade bait?

Blackwood has zero value. Can’t stay healthy and when he is he gets outplayed by every goalie in the NJ org.

Leafs certainly aren’t parting ways with the KHL rookie of the year for him.

While you are right that being an RFA usually means a player has less leverage, in this case things are a bit different. Meier has only 1 year of team control left and a $10m QO. This means he could easily take that QO and test the market next year after a full season of playing with either Nico or Jack.

Would he? We don’t really know anything other then his agent had an ask of $9m before the trade. He wanted to play in NJ. NJ wanted him. Our GM hasn’t started negotiations yet. Imagine they will find something they agree upon.

If they won’t sign, it probably means they are on one-way street to UFA…and trade value sinks. Would then become ‘own rentals’.

Totally spaces Sharangovich (sorry Yegor).

On Severson…I would bring back if possible and figure out the log jam next summer. Never hurts to have too much defense and I think he is our best option to stretch the ice.

He doesn’t take care of himself, do the stuff he needs to take care of his body. It’s a maturity thing. Sounds like it was better this year than last year. I hope, for his sake, wherever he ends up it will be with a club that brings out his best…because there is a good goalie in there somewhere. Some have speculated he wants to be in Canada.

It is hard to imagine a better place for Timo. I am biased, but it really is a good fit. Where else a 26-year old Swiss power forward would want to play over the 8-years?

Also, our GM has said he wants players who want to be here. Meier wanted to be here. Have no idea about Marner, Nylander…but until we see one of them vacationing with the Devils players over All-Star break, no reason to think they do.

Even without him NJ has a great tandem going into next year and a great young club. Sometimes attitude is a big part of it and to take the next step you need guys that buy in. I wouldn’t bat an eye letting him walk if I was NJ.

Contracts signed after your elc compared to contracts signed after a bridge deal can NOT be comparable.

The same goes for UFA contracts. Apples to oranges, none of it works.

Yeah I definitely agree with your premise. I was just pointing out that in this case both parties have fairly equal leverage (with a slight advantage to the player in this situation IMO). As much as I agree that the fit with NJ is superb, this is likely the last big contract of his career and other considerations can factor in his decision. It certainly is possible that his agent asks for more than many would like.

When did NJ jump Minnesota for the top prospect pool in the league?

Both the Athletic and Bader had Minnesota ranked #1, and NJ #2 in January. Sure, NJ has some higher end pieces, but Minnesota has better depth and more expected NHL'ers than NJ does.

Two most recent rankings (Hockey News in April and McKeens this month) had New Jersey #1.

I actually made a post about them here

If it’s about money, Devils have cap to work with, but have been clear they won’t overpay. The term our GM has been using is “buy in”…as he wants players to buy into what they are building. So the leverage angle from team is not “you are an RFA so your options are limited”…it is “we have something good going here that I think you’ll want to be a part of…”

As a fan, it sounds like a good sell to me.
