Not So Drastic Makeover

Description
I'm over the cap because I have a 24-man roster here. The idea is that Legare, Puustinen and Smith shuttle back and forth between the NHL and the AHL. Or maybe the Pens find a better fourteenth forward and seventh defenseman.

I think that four free-agent signings could return this team to playoff contention next season. (I signed Barbashev because I think that Jason Zucker is going to want close to $5 million.) I know that Justin Holl was this year's whipping boy for Leafs Nation, but he does play 20 minutes per game and he should be good enough in a third-pairing role. Of course, contention requires Pettersson and Letang to remain injury-free and Petry to regain something close to his previous form. (I'm assuming that the Detroit fans are correct in insisting that Petry isn't someone Stevie Yzerman would be interested in. Obviously, trading Petry, even with a poor return, would enable the Pens to sign a quality replacement RhD like Damon Severson. But everyone seems to disagree on whether Petry wants to go anywhere, and who might want him.)

The new GM makes a daring move and tries to solve the long-term goaltending problem with an out-of-the-box trade and an eye on the future. First two selections in the 2023 draft:

14th overall: Samuel Honzek, LW, Vancouver (WHL)
43rd overall: Trey Augustine, G, USA-U18 (USNTDP)

Wings would accept that trade. Pittsburgh is likely going to be a bad team in a couple years and that will be a high 1st round pick.

Seems like a crazy overpay for Soucy, no?

And also seems like a lot of money wasted on defense when Smith and Rutta are right there. That money desperately needs to be spend on that forward group. Side note - apparently Hallander just signed for some Swedish team, so he's done here.

Interesting trade proposal. I think Detroit has to take it.

Considering that the Pens are more than likely going to be pretty bad in 2025, I'd definitely do that trade as a Wings fan.

I'm trying to prepare for the inevitable injuries, especially with Letang and Petry still there.

I was aware of the Hallander development but as you can see from the Initial Creation Date, I began work on this ACGM well before it occurred but forgot about it prior to hitting the "Publish" button. (That's also why the Nylander signing amount is off.)

Fair enough. Although I think Ruhwedel and Friedman are fine 7th defenseman to fill in for injuries - and obviously way cheaper. I just worry because the bottom 6 - specifically the 3rd line - was clearly the biggest issue this past season. So I would much rather spend the money on 3rd line forwards than on defenseman when they already technically have 8 NHL caliber defenseman. If you want to add defense, maybe only add one guy, or two cheaper ones for depth. At the very least I would dump Holl. And I'm sure you can get Soucy for a good bit cheaper too. But those are just my personal opinions lol

It's all good - I figured it was something like that. And you can just slide Carter over and put one of the bench guys in do it's not that big of a deal. I just threw it in there just in case you didn't know.

Points well taken.

I do have Friedman and Ruhwedel still on the team, just down in the minors, so maybe Holl is overkill. I just thought that the decision had been made that they weren't NHL material any longer. And if Soucy comes for less, and with the unexpected (for this ACGM) absence of Hallander, maybe that money goes to a #3RW and Carter gets promoted (in space) to the pressbox.

I would say they're pretty comfortable with Ruhwedel as an extra NHL dman in case of injuries. Friedman though, I'm not so sure. But they also have Smith now, as you have on your roster there as well. I think they consider Smith NHL ready, they just had him in the AHL because of botched cap moves. So, in my eyes, they already have at least 7 defenseman signed they consider NHL caliber - 8 if you include Freidman.

I get your idea of wanting depth in case of injuries, just maybe went slightly too much there and left a hole on that 3rd line in my opinion. If you scrap Holl + Hallander, and Soucy comes in at like 4mil, that gives you around 4mil to sign another forward. I just personally think that would benefit the team more than signing Holl to play the 3RD over Rutta. Then I think you'd have a fairly solid team. You could always find a way to trade Rutta too if you like Holl better, I just think having them both is a bit redundant. And anything to get Carter in the press box lol. If there is a god, maybe they tell Carter he's not going to suit up, he gets pissed and retires/waives, then they dump him to Arizona.

Yeah, upon reflection, I think you've made a major improvement on this ACGM. Now I'm gonna start looking around for the right third-liner to put in there.

Nah just a little one lol - but I appreciate it. You were on the right track just a small difference in where you're spending money that I think would make the overall team better. Looking forward to the update.
