Description
looks like caufield is going to be one of those nightmare contracts canadian teams have to go through everytime they draft a superstar american player, so how about the habs just gets ahead of it and trade him at the draft for one of the non-american stud in the top 6.
i'd give up a lot with caufield to get bedard but i don't think you can make it happen
fantilli is a little bit more realistic but expensive
carlsson would be the closest to a 1 for 1 trade
and for benson i think the habs could get a little bit more in return

i don't think that's true, he's 21 years old and was on pace for 40+ goals on a miserable montreal team
it's not like the habs would want to trade him under normal circumstances but like i said above, amercian star player and canadian team don't go well together

what do you think about it though ? it's not like i want to trade him but considering everything i said i feel like it could be a solid move. im asking here because i haven't seen anybody bring this up and i don't get why. i feel like if you can turn a guy who you'll probably have to overpay to keep and then lose for nothing in a couple of years in free agency into one of the guys in the top 6, doesn't sound that bad.

well its not brought up because it is believed caufield will sign here longterm. i mean if somehow he didnt want to sign hsre and he just want to get to ufa asap, it could be a good deal, but nothing indactes we are in this situation.

why isn't he taking the 8x8 then ? i know im not the gm and i know nothing about what's actually going in their negotiations but i find it hard to believe he hasn't been offered that contract. all of his draft friends have accepted their offer, boldy and hughes. zegras will sign sooner rather than later most likely and it's going to be in that range. why does the only guy who plays for a canadian team decides that he wants ''to bet on himself'' and screw the team's cap. that's why they should just trade him right now and please don't draft smith.

Chicago got more than that for DeBrincat.

lol. Chicago got #7, # 39 & a 3rd rounder for DeBrincat.
Caufield would easily be traded for 3 to 5 overall. And it's not enough either. At least 1 more pick (late 1st, early 2nd) would be needed

Guys, neither of you are being remotely realistic. Yes Debrincat received more. He's done VASTLY more in the NHL to prove his worth. DeBrincat was a 2x 40 goal scorer and neither of those were his best Goals per 60 since that happened in the bubble.

SO FAR, Caufields best season is about equal to Debrincat's worst season. Except DeBrincat can play defense. Something Caufield's yet to show consistently. And DeBrincat is very durable.

Lastly and most importantly is the situation the Hawks are in. As of today I wouldn't give the TBL 1st for Caufield. They're rebuilding. Stay true to the rebuild.

Yep, I agree. But Caufield hasn't had a full season in the NHL yet. He hasn't had the opportunity to develop after 3 yrs of pro hockey. You can't say he's 'worse' offensively, in my opinion.
Also yea, I totally agree Caufield can't defend.

I don't want to trade Caufield either, as he's part of the rebuild. But I think the question here is what to do if Caufield's contract demands are too much.
Personally I would trade him IF he wanted more than 8m. If that were the case, I would definitely want a top 1st rounder with another draft pick.

Just to double check, you're not saying he's NOT worth a 1st right? You're saying you wouldn't trade him...2 different things.

Very fair points and yes, he's worth a 1st. Of course, sorry, didn't mean to suggest he wasn't. Just saying the Hawks aren't exactly in a place to send away 1sts. They need more 1sts.
