trying to save the jackets impossible

Description
First off we take Fantilli with the 2OA pick, give him a year in the minors to develop, do not bring him into a situation this bad at only 18 years old.

The Vancouver trade gives us the 11OA pick in a stacked draft, and we take 2 contracts. The less problematic of the two is Myers, who is up at the end of this upcoming season (aka a season before all of the rfas are due), him and Gudbranson can fight it out throughout the season for the 3RD spot. Then there is OEL. OEL was not as bad as people say this season, only slightly below average in both offensive play driving, and defense, and is better than any other option we have at 2LD for this upcoming season. In future seasons once Mateychuk is ready for top 4 minutes, OEL can be thrown on the 3rd pairing, or maybe even LTIR with how many games he's been missing over the past 3 seasons.

For the Philly trade, Hayes has been linked to Columbus all year, but it has been said that Columbus wouldn't take the full contract. For this to work, Philly would have to reatin salary and take a bad contract in Roslovic in return. Hayes would finally give the Jackets a somewhat serviceable 1C (better than Jenner at least) until Fantilli or Johnson can take over that role full time. This trade will make Columbus a bit better in the short term which is what management wants, and will help Philly tank.

Why sign Fantilli to play in minors…just let him stay at Michigan another year.

Canucks decline. They won't pay to dump OEL, and I don't think they have any interest in moving that pick either.

Should they do it? Absolutely not. But its the canucks, the Hronek trade shows that they are willing to trade futures to make the playoffs next season, and in order to have a chance at playoffs theyll have to get rid of myers and oel

You don’t think the canucks would want to move out 13 mil being used up by pylons? And the Hronek trade tells me that they are willing to trade futures for immediate success

I don't hate it from Columbus' perspective, but that would be a hard sell for VAN. OEL on the third pair for the next eternity would be rough obviously, but Meyers can get flipped (retained or even double retained) for something at the deadline. It's all a moot point though if OEL doesn't waive his NMC.

I do. Making ACGM and justifying a trade where a team takes a bad contract on "because you can flip it later" is lazy and uncreative. A first, a sixth, and Jake Bean's absence is not enough enticement to take on both Myers and OEL's contracts, especially if it hinges on the idea that you have to take on the risk of finding a second deal later to flip one or both of them.

Pass on the Vancouver trade or at least the OEL portion. I am sure the Jackets or some other team would take Meyers for a price once his bonus has been paid on Sept. 15th.
Also, I wouldn't call Roslovic's contract a bad contract. I am fine keeping Roslovic until some other player makes him expendable and so far that hasn't really happened.

Lazy and uncreative, sure, but it still makes sense for a rebuilding team. Myers especially makes sense after July 1st, since he only makes $1M; and he's a huge right-shot defensive D-man, if he's even serviceable someone would overpay for that at the deadline. It's a relatively safe and cheap bet.

The criticism of OEL though is 100% valid, He's wildly inconsistent, and basically a Gudbranson-level liability at an extra year and almost twice the cap hit. But...for, in all likelihood, 11th or 12th OA? I doubt Vancouver pays that price, and they may even have to add more, but it's at least more interesting than just "Myers for pick". I'd be tempted, especially if you pick someone like Reinbacher who would theoretically be an immediate upgrade on D when OEL is up and the team is ready to compete.

Edit: I realize trading Myers after the draft defeats the purpose of those draft picks, but maybe the 6th goes to 2024 and the centerpiece is whoever Vancouver picks at 11th/12th OA instead.

They traded a first because they had one to spare… the Canucks aren’t trading their only pick in the first 2 rounds

If the Canucks want cap space, they'll pay Myers bonus and then move him to a team like Anaheim. Shouldn't cost more than a 4th. OEL is a weird situation. I think that money could certainly be put to better use, but I don't think getting rid of him is worth what it will cost (either high value picks or lots of retention). I also think the Canucks management are extremely high on OEL, much more than they should be. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if they for some reason viewed him as a positive asset. The only reason the Canucks gave up a 1st for Hronek was because it was an extra one they acquired in the Horvat trade. Hronek filled an immediate need (top 4 quality RHD), while this deal doesn't really. Canucks management have also been very clear that, like most, they are extremely high on the 2023 draft class. I don't think they'd move out all their top picks after previously stating numerous times that they really like the class.

Happy to take another contract back. Just simplified OPs proposal and CBJ got a better player than Hayes in JT Miller.
