Friends, Managers and Sabres, lend me your ears.
I am not here to praise the value of the trades but rather the value of assets.
Henri and Victor are not bad they have merely replaced Casey Mittelstadt as the Sabres whipping boys.
Last year Jokiharju was Dahlin's partner and only Rasmus played more minutes than Henri.
Few NHL LW have as many goals as Olofsson, and even fewer forwards score faster than his 1.6goals/60 minutes.
He is an elite goal scorer.
So why am I ranting, Buffalo fans are trading Victor and Henri because they feel they can be replaced easily.
The fact remains they have value, they are not garbage and have more value than what Sabre fans are giving up to replace them.
They have value, but they’re not very desirable would be my statement
Jokiharju is a consistent 0.25PPG guy, which isn’t enough for the minutes he gets and for being in the Top-4. He doesn’t stand out or do anything particular special just yet, he’s just average. So he’s maybe worth a 2nd Round Pick or Equivalent Prospect right now. A Team looking to rebuild and continue developing him might have a good player on their hands eventually, but he’s at least 2-3 years away imo from being a desirable enough piece that Teams will forego drafting their own guy and trading anything decent for him
Yes, Olofsson can obviously score goals, but so could James Neal and similar to Neal, I don’t believe Olofsson knows the words Defence and Back Check, which are also just as equally important in hockey as scoring is. He’s a 20-25 Goal Scorer, as I’m not sure his 17.4% Shot Percentage this season is truly sustainable. If you could use him only on the 4th line on offensive zone Faceoffs and on the PP, he’d be a great offensive specialist, but if for every goal he & his lines score when he’s on the ice the opponent scores even more against, that’s not a valuable addition or player you seek to acquire and have on your team.
At least Jokiharju is young, affordable and not set to enter his peak years until 27 (D-Men & Goalies TYPICALLY take longer to develop and peak later than forwards) while Olofsson is at his peak now at 27, likely won’t improve or get any better and at $4.75mil/yr and only contributing 0.50PPG, he’ll be lucky to bring BUF the Equivalent of a 3rd or 4th Round Pick from a Team desperate for more scoring. He might bring more if he’s 50% retained, especially at next season’s TDL when he’s a Pending UFA and comes off the books after the season
Mittlestadt finally had a nice Break Out Season Offensively, but he’s nothing special and I certainly understand BUF Fans past disappointment in him. You expect far more from a former 8th overall pick. Overall he’s soft, doesn’t hit, isn’t great at Faceoffs, doesn’t kill penalties, doesn’t block many shots. He just isn’t anything great in any area, nor good enough defensively to be a reliable shut down Centre, so he’s another Left Shot LW, which are a dime a dozen. Given his age and bounce back year, he’s probably increased his value from a 3rd Round Pick to a 2nd, but he needs to work on his consistency and we can’t ignore the past and everything above and he’s definitely not worth a 1st Round Pick imo
