Blackhawks Interesting Discussion

Équipe: 2022-23 Blackhawks de Chicago

Description
There are 2 scenarios here and I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on it. Which scenario would you prefer for the rebuild?

Scenario 1: The Blackhawks end up getting the first overall pick and drafting Bedard. In this scenario Bedard puts up 82 points in 82 games and wins the calder, however, the hawks get a 5-8 draft pick in the first round next year. Meaning, the Hawks get a Superstar in Connor Bedard, and a chance at a possible first line forward next year.

Scenario 2: The Blackhawks get the 3rd or 4th pick and draft Matvei Michkov (Promises to play in the NHL in 2026 once his KHL contract is up). This scenario also means the hawks will tank once again for a 1-3 pick in the 2024 draft and get Forward Macklin Celebrini. The Hawks in this scenario get the projected first overall pick and Matvei Michkov who is putting up almost point per game numbers in the 2nd best league in the world, the KHL, as a 17 year old.

I'm very conflicted about which one I'd prefer, but let me hear your thoughts.

I'm very confused by the conflicting sentences in Scenario 2: "The Blackhawks get the 3rd or 4th pick" and "The Hawks in this scenario get the projected first overall pick." I wish you'd clarify this for dummies like me. Personally, I think that either scenario is good for Chicago.

Hawks get the 3rd or 4th pick in '23 and end up w/ Michkov, and 1st overall in '24 and get Celebrini.

I’d prefer Carlsson and wait and see what winger we can end up with the following year

Sign me up for scenario #1. Both scenarios are great for the Hawks, but Bedard is a true generational talent. I have confidence in Davidson finding a couple of other great players to play w/ Bedard with all the picks the Hawks have accumulated. I'd also be OK w/ Hawks getting Fantilli at #2 in '23 (he goes back to MI) and see where Hawks end up in '24 draft order - even if it's 5 to 8.

I've heard that Carlsson isn't a strong skater. This kinda goes against what Davidson and Richardson envision for the team. A fast and Grindy team seems to be the build. I could be wrong though since I haven't watched him play.

Gotta take Bedard. Can't pass on generational talent and he appears to be just that.

Scenario 1 for sure. I'm actually in the camp that regardless off talent...a REAL discussion needs to happen between ANY GM, Bedard and his family. It's VERY far from automatic that even his generational talent is a gimme. Even Bedard suffer a broken collar bone his rookie year. Yes, I hear the Jack Hughes counterpoint being...get that bad year out of the way, but its just so much to risk. Bedard is even young by within this draft itself. His physical maturity in being able to handle a full 82 NHL schedule with grown men gunning for him means more for 1 year than his skill. Just my opinion. Stay in the WHL 1 more year.

The biggest mistake to any franchise will hands downs no ifs ands or buts will be not taking Michkov at 2OA

I'm thinking he maybe very good... but what happens when he gets caught and run over... 5'10" less than 150lbs I last saw...

Or doesn't show up to the NHL. I'd be taking Fantilli at #2. Not to say Michkov is bad. Clearly he's not.

Logically, scenario one would be the most favorable. But, there are no sure things in the NHL. We have seen high picks never make it at the NHL level, and highly touted "superstar" talents become mediocre NHL players. We have also seen 6th round picks become superstars. So, I just hope that, wherever the chips fall, CHI's front office drafts well and can assemble a cohesive roster with a good culture. Judging not only from his play but the content of his character as well, I think Bedard would be a great fit in that vision.

Then again, I also question whether having "generational superstar talents" complicates the cap situation more than it is worth. Is a well balanced roster better than a top heavy one that tries to squeeze surplus value out of low AAV contracts?

Also, in scenario two, that means we would most likely be a bottom feeder for one or even two more seasons, which means MORE high end talent coming from the draft and into CHI's pipeline. Rather than getting Bedard RIGHT NOW, bringing in talent around him immediately, thus making our draft picks later and lowering the chance of using those picks to bring in high end talent. But, even with Bedard, if they don't try to buy a roster RIGHT AWAY, I think we would still at least have a top 10 pick in next years draft and maybe even the draft after that, depending on what they do in the summer of 2024.

Either way we’re still gonna suck for another couple years but if we get one we can cut down the amount of time we’re gonna suck for more

your point on scenario 2 is exactly what I was going for. I think getting Michkov plus Celebrini and even more top 5 picks for the next 2-3 years would be much better than just getting Bedard.

For sure. The big thing with Michkov is, not only how long he is signed with SKA, but we don't know what the world is going to be like by that point. If things get bad enough between Russia, Ukraine, and the world in general, there is a possibility we could NEVER see Michkov in the NHL.

Either way, if we get a top 4 pick this year, and a top 5 pick next year. Plus all the other picks the Hawks have, I feel confident they will come out of the rebuild with a good young team.
