I don't think it's us that don't understand the situation. Believe it or not, players get traded as pure rentals every year. These players/teams understand that the player has no intention of re-signing with the team that acquired them. All you'd have to do is a little bit of research and take a look at the returns for top players at the TDL and you'd realize WPG can get much more than what's proposed.

This is my point exactly. PLD won't be under contract unless you match the QO we're going to have him sign, at which point you cannot trade him for 1 year after this. All you'd have to do is a little bit of research and take a look to realize you trade him for a fair price and not a kings ransom now, or, you match and get a year to hope you win it all then he walks to us for free. No team is going to offer you the farm for a guy who wants to play for one team only, as much as you'd like to try to deny it.

Except this offer is less than your 24 unprotected 1st and 3rd anyway, even assuming the habs make an offer sheet, pissing off the rest of the league and setting themselves up to be vulnerable to offer sheets in the future. So in your hypothetical situation you're assuming he's signing an OS (not QO like you stated above)? Not once did you say that lol. Also, I doubt WPG lets this play out after July 1st when an OS can be signed. This would be a draft weekend move, avoiding that situation completely. If MTL signs him to an OS after that when he's with his new team, the 1 year trade rule does nothing seeing as how the entire point of trading PLD would be trading him to a CONTENDING team so they have him for the full year.

The max MTL could give him is $6,302,230 which would be an easy match for the contending team.
