Horrible trades. By in-house, do you mean guys they drafted? Because Jenner would fit in that category. They already have an in house core with him, Werenski, Johnson Marchenko. You're also trading all those guys away for more players who aren't "in-house", so really makes no sense to me. What are you trying to achieve?
They didn't try to rush the rebuild. Johnny Hockey wanted to come there. They weren't even pursuing him. Laine was only acquired because they had to move out PLD. I don't know if you consider Gudbranson a big signing (he is money-wise), but he was only necessary to stop the team from constantly being bullied and run over.
The CBJ are just fine. Building toward the future with a ton of good young pieces and a handful of impact vets. Jiricek and a top-3 pick could step in next year and improve the roster, and Jarmo has firepower to add through a trade or FA as well.
Mostly their success is going to hinge on goaltending and a coach who can implement some kind of defensive structure.
