Next year thinking about massive dumps and flipable assets

Description
Let’s assume we draft Carlsson with #3. No Bedard or Fantilli means that the Tank is extended for another full season. That means taking on cap dumps when applicable and signing guys with the intention of rebuilding value to be flipped at the deadline.

I have signed a ton of UFA’s in this post to show what my idea of what UFA’s we should target for the purposes of building value. I have two on the roster and the rest are on LTIR, this is because I believe the hawks should look at Drouin and Rodrigues first.

I don’t think Washington is going to “Rebuild” with OVI around and Murphy fits the mold of their players. Their pick is top 10 right now but they are also playing poorly. For the sake of argument let’s say their pick ends up in the 13-15 range.

I hear the kings fans who say that Petersen has a cheap buyout if you bury him in the minors for another year. I counter with, what I’d Chicago is willing to do the dump for a decently cheap price that you don’t have to worry about any buyouts or dead cap hits as your hit your window of contention begins to open. A 2025 2nd is fair value .

If they can beat out Petersen or Mrazek for the job then they can stay in the NHL. This is not the point in the rebuild that you keep spots open for prospects.

Caps pass. They are set on their right side with Carlson, Jensen and Iorio not far behind.

This is making the assumption that the pick eventually falls in the 13-15 range. Thanks for the comment though.

Can’t Jensen play both sides? In any case I think Sandin-Murphy is worth some consideration although I appreciate the feedback.

Disagree on that one. Most important thing right now is developing the assets we have. I'd say there's a strong case to be made that the NHL is what is best for their development next season

If the NHL is the best for their development I’m open to them showing and earning it. Peterson and Mrazek would both clear waivers next season, so I’m not worried about keeping spots open for Soderblöm and Stauber because it can be done in 48 hours at any point in the season. In any case I value the 2nd round pick we would presumably get much higher than the development those goalies would get playing on THIS roster. I think it’s much better to load up the ice hogs and have them split starts.

As a Kings fan, I think that’s reasonable. I also think Petersen is going to rebound based on how he’s improved in Ontario. This could be a win win.

Value is fine and I like Murphy a lot but it doesn't make sense for the Caps to move their 1st this year unless they are getting an impact forward back in return. Even with the trade down there's just a massive difference this year between the top 12 and the rest of the board

In any case they probably won’t be able to get an impact forward (right now) by using their draft selection. I would almost argue that it’s possible the Caps could take the Tampa picks in this trade and flip them for an somewhat impactful forward. I don’t know what the cap would be at this point but if the picks are around 24 overall in each round then would Arizona balk at those two picks for Nick Schmaltz? It’s not really my problem to figure out but worth considering.

I think Schmaltz is the perfect target for them and I would be willing to move the 23 1st for him, also think that because Schmaltz is owed so many real dollars and ARZ is cheap as hell that some team will get him for a lot less than people expect

If you got Schmaltz and Murphy for basically pick number 13-15 and cap space I think Washington would have to consider it where they are in their contention window.

To be fair I posted a trade that was

    Turcotte + Petersen

    For a third round pick.

Kings fans weren't feeling it but I don’t think it’s completely unfair.

No idea who was saying Turcotte + First because that’s ridiculous.

Given Turcotte's current value, I'd assume you aren't TERRIBLY far off speaking purely to "fairness". But the Kings would still say no, and it makes sense that my fellow Kings fans felt that way. They (being the LA organization) would rather take their risk with a player that's stalled on development obviously due to injury as opposed to lack of skill. A 3rd round pick would be lucky to help the team compete in 3 years, whereas the Kings can get lucky with Turc as soon as next year if he doesn't get hurt... again. They'll do what they think is best to begin the competition window as soon as possible. That means not trading Turcotte for low value or future picks.

I'll add my voice to my two esteemed friends. I've done the math and if the Kings are to re-sign Gavrikov, it almost requires a move like this. Your idea is both sound and reasonable. And yes, we've been bombarded with Turcotte, Petersen and a first proposals.

I don't believe Jensen has ever played left side, at least in Washington. As of now the top 4 looks like
    Sandin-Carlson
    Fehervary-Jensen
    Alexeyev-TvR (if re-signed)

The only criticism I would add to this stance is that you are underestimating the value of the third and cap space could have immediately on your team next year. The third could be used at the draft, but also in trade. The cap space could be used to sign a UFA that also impacts your team for next season.

Don’t get me wrong I understand wanting to keep Turcotte and even agree with it to an extent. The vagueness of using a third as a trade chip or signing a UFA definitely isn’t a super strong but I would say it is at least comparable with what turcotte might do.

All things considered with chicagos boatload of 2nds this year I would further incentivize the kings to do this trade by offering a high second instead of a third. Might not exactly counter your stance on not trading Turcotte for low picks but I digress as this has turned into rambling.
