Hagel is also much cheaper, and at the time had three years of control.

Meier is making over 5x his cap (and over 6x his salary) and only has one more year of control.

I can understand thinking that if you’ve never seen an NHL deadline deal ever before.

Grier did well.

He was on a 31 goal pace, which isn’t nothing for a player who isn’t a goal scorer

Which is why he is going to cost the moon and the stars on his next contract - kid has a $10M QO, which is where negotiations will begin. That absolutely factored into his trade market.

Cap, cost, and control rule above all.

Frankly, considering the number of awful contracts (and the Jones buyout) Grier inherited, I think he’s done quite well.

Value is a function of performance and contractual status. Hagel’s value was way higher.

If you think that Chicago package for Hagel is bigger than the Meier package, then you don't know much about hockey or prospects. Hagel package was BIG. The Meier package was bigger. But you would need to understand the prospects involved to see that. San Jose did just fine in the trade,

Muk is a project, ohoychiuk is a bottom pair guy at best, zetterlund is a bottom 6 forward, 1st and 2nd not enough for on of the best power forwards in the sport

he’s had good Ideas but his outcome has been sub par.
I like the Nieto Merkley for McDonald Kaut deal, Megna deal, and Sturm and Benning signing, and Eyssimont pickup and Svechnikov pickup have been decent. the rest of his deals are mixed bag to aweful.
to me he’s been a solid AGM but the sharks need a stone cold killer GM like Wilson was in his prime. (his last 3 years were dreadful and screwed the sharks long term)

Grier did pretty well given the circumstances. Accelerated the rebuild a year at least. Everyone wants the start to be thrown in but teams don’t move those guys. He got Zetterlund who’s probably going to be a long term middle 6 guy, Mukuhllin who is probably going to be a 2nd pair guy, the Ohk guy who’s probably gonna be an nhler and a 1st and 2nd.

Trading a 3rd in a deep draft class for the honours of signing Luke Kunnin is crazy. So is the lindholm contract. They also barely got anything back for burns at almost 3m retainer

Burns deal was more to respect the player and give him a last chance to get a cup than the actual return. but I agree.

Oh……good one?

It was a good trade for the sharks. The sharks fanbase had ridiculously high expectations that had no basis in reality. I’ve been telling y’all this for months. It’s your fault, not his.

Couple things:
1. Is he though? (I can answer that, no. He isn’t)
2. Bo Horvat is better than Meier, and should have had more value
3. San Jose got the better package.

That 2nd will likely turn into a 1st if NJ just wins 2 playoff rounds in either 23' or 24'. If that happens I think the deal is fair, albeit not spectacular return for Meier. If it stays a 2nd then I agree very disappointing. Really I just hate that Grier accepted the condition on the 2024 1st/2nd and that he retained at all (using up one of SJ's slots), but the return was not far off what some people were proposing (the non mercer/nemec posts). I personally was saying 1st+muk+holtz+players solely for cap.
But for the rest of the trade we will have to see how Muk develops... or if Holtz turns into a superstar or a bust and Grier could have had him instead.

Yeah, I think so because when Fitz offered Holtz they probably watered down the deal to compensate for the more prestigious prospect, like taking out the 2024 1st/2nd and more pieces. For example maybe they only offered 1st+Holtz+Johnsson. It makes sense Grier's side was more interested in Muk and the other pieces which aligns with the quantity approach we've seen from him so far (like trading the 11thOA in the 2022 draft). There was apparently questions about Holtz's poorer skating and transitioning to the NHL. It must have been too much of a risk.
