Methinks the rumor (fact?) that Meier won't sign an extension this season has a lot to do with it. GMKA isn't going to Murray this thing on a rental, and I'm with him. Not saying he shouldn't do something significant as a reward for a Sabres team that's working some magic (four games above real .500 and in the top wild card spot via points percentage,) but any player coming in needs to have a cheap trade price or be in their wheelhouse for age and contract term.
