Barbashev trade proposal number 3

Créé par: CantStopWontStop
Équipe: 2022-23 Blues de St-Louis
Date de création initiale: 24 févr. 2023
Publié: 24 févr. 2023
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Edit: this proposal is dead on arrival, but some of us learned about compensatory picks for 1st round collegiate athletes! Kind of a rarer case.

First off, the Sabres are about to be a wagon. Go look at their cap situation. Only Okposo is over 30, no contracts besides skinner into the 30s, only spending 15 mil on defense, Tage Thompson gonna put up Austin Matthews numbers for 7.1 mil, Tuch above a point per game but under 5 mil. This is the best cap situation in the entire league for 2 years, then the defense will get paid. I could go on and on…

In order to maximize the next 2 years, the Sabres should be buyers to close the 2 point gap in the wildcard race. Barbashev is the versatile but affordable addition to do that. He can fill any hole, obviously some better than others, to give the Sabres some playoff experience.

The proposal is for the rights to Ryan Johnson, left side defenseman who was the 31st pick in 2019.

If left unsigned, he will become a free agent this summer. The blues should have the room to give him ice time.

Additionally, the Sabres have substantial draft capital. Proposal includes Vegas’ 2nd and the Sabres 4th for the retention.

The second propsal is for Detroits Annti Tuomisto

The first is for Bostons Trent Frederic.

Pretty sure Blues can't retain on anymore players unless the rule changed. He doesn't cost much anyway

Buffalo is one of the highest scoring teams in the league, I don't think they need a forward right now unless is a defensive 3C who can win some face-offs. If Adams makes a move it's probably for a better 3rd pairing LD to push Bryson into the pressbox.

It is 3 now, and Buffalo doesn’t need it unless they have other plans. The 4th goes away if its unneeded

If you dropped the prospect I could see the value being alright. Not sure if Buffalo is a great fit though.

Historically, these rights are exchanged for later round picks, often 5-7th rounders.

So the total price of Barbashev is a 2nd and a 5th-7th rounder. That seems inline with most rumors and historic prescedent.

The Sabres have 4 lineup regulars 22 or under, 6 24 or under. While I don’t pretend to know their plans, a versatile veteran would certainly find a slot in a post season lineup with that much youth.

Wasn’t Johnson the 1st rounder from the ROR trade? I’m not sure why they’d move him for a late pick. It’s not like he is developing poorly.

I’d expect a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year for Barbashev at minimum. The issue is teams don’t just ship off their high draft picks until it’s late enough in their development they know what they have unless they are adding them on in large packages.

He is unsigned. Is NCAA.

He will become a free agent this summer if he does not sign with Buffalo before this summer.

Yes, this basically gives us our pick from 2019 back.

Right but is there a rift between him signing or were they just waiting for him to develop? If there is an issue between him and the org I could see it. But I just don’t know if there’s any evidence of that

I’ve never been in these types of negotiations but my presumption/assumption is the player wants nhl ice time and a depth chart where they can move up. In St. Louis’ case, we’re skating Tyler Tucker, who I like, and Calle Rosen, and then the rumors of shaking up the defense - I think we would have to basically clear a path for him (given his performance starting in Springfield if he doesn’t make the club out of camp) to be an NHL-er at some point next season for him to sign with us.

He’s basically either a free agent or a team has to convince him to join. It’s a risk.

From a young defenseman’s perspective, stl is attractive I’d guess - there isn’t any long term depth at the top end, and no offense to Calle Rosen or Tyler Tucker, but if we can skate them we can find ice.

Also, I may be wrong but I don’t think so in that: I believe we could sign him this year and he could play a few pro games at the end of the season. I recall we did that once a few years ago - cannot recall who.

I believe this happened the last time we did not make the playoffs. The dude skated like 4 games after his NCAA season ended. I don’t think he ultimately panned out. We didn’t trade for his rights, I think we just signed him as he was undrafted. It’s gonna bother me I can’t remember his name.

Buffalo gets a 2nd round pick if Johnson choose to go the UFA route. The only person he needs to beat out for a roster spot right now is Jacob Bryson, and he's terrible so that's a pretty easy task. He can also apparently play the right side as well so there are options.

There wasn't much talk about him which led to some fear of him going UFA, but I think it was Pronman recently said he's hearing Johnson is planning to sign at the end of the NCAA season. at that point even if they are in the playoff hunt I could see them giving him a couple of games to burn his first year. As I said, Buffalo bottom pairing LD right now is Bryson... and Clague neither of which have been great.

Makes sense. Thanks for the insight.

Obv the proposal only makes sense if there is legitimate concern inside Buffalo that he will not sign. If Pronman is right this proposal is dead on arrival.

It would be nice for Buffalo to change up the defense contract expiries too. If he burns this year or doesn’t at least he will push a year or 2 beyond the current expiries.

No clue but he may have a solid comparable in Scott Perunovich: 925k + 1.2 mil signing bonus for 2.175 AAV.

I don' think Buffalo is at a point in their development where any rental makes sense - but a sign and trade would be worth it

It’s purely speculative by me, but I believe that Barbashev’s agent (Dan Milstein) does not like the St. Louis organization. I think something happened about 2 years ago and I don’t think they will work together going forward. Could be wrong.

I also think Barbashev wants as much term as he can get at 27.

I’m guessing 4 x 4 is the fair middle ground just cause I’m a numbers nerd and stare at this crap too much. He does play center quite a bit, but he also plays wing. So somewhere between average 3C pay and average 3rd line winger pay where every year is a purchased UFA year at 27.

I’m obviously biased but Barbashev has had excellent development and a clean injury history. Kinda a shame he likely will play elsewhere next season no matter what happens. If for some reason he ends up with y’all - I guess the best way I can put it is I don’t really remember myself yelling “dammit barbashev” at the tv ever. And nearly every goal he scores is around the net, a place some players tend to shy away from.

to be a minor pedant: one of the most recent trades of an NCAA guy who wasn't going to sign with his draft team was Jack McBain last year, who Arizona gave up a 2nd rounder for. And of course, one of the most famous examples in the past few seasons is the Rangers giving up a pair of 2nds for Adam Fox's rights.

Truth.

His rights value could be substantially higher than I previously said. While there are a ton of late round transactions, as you’ve said there are others that are much more valuable. Admittedly do not watch NCAA or know where Johnson compares relative to recent history.

And honestly when thinking about it, these rights may have all felt an increase in value due to the value of younger players thanks to the covid cap. Going forward it is possible that all collegiate prospects value increases, and the days of 5-7th rounders is in the rear view.

I believe you’re correct.

Fortunately for barbashev, after that contract was signed, STL upped his ice time from ~13 min to ~16 min. At least he’ll get a decent paycheck going forward, and help mend damage between Milstein and STL if it exists.

I think most Agents have a short memory. They really need to in order to get their players the best deals they can and to fulfill the players wishes. If Barbashev says "I want to stay with the Blues" Milstein has to be able to make that deal happen.

I'll be honest, I didn't know they did compensation picks for NCAA players - NHL's website says the compensatory pick is on a "case by case basis" but i assume there's some formula where a team can guess what they're gonna get if a guy doesn't sign, and then they can hold out for that type of value coming back - no sense trading a guy's rights for a 4th if you know you're gonna get a 2nd if you hang on to them and he walks, ya know?
