Florida does need a top 4 defenseman but I doubt they'd be willing to trade Reinhart and while they could trade Duclair I'm pretty certain they wouldn't trade both Reinhart and Duclair. If they are willing to consider trading Reinhart then Hanifin and Schwindt or Mackey for Reinhart and Mahura might be possible. But Calgary would need to be sure they can bring a defenseman like Schenn or even better Gavrikov to replace Hanifin.

I can't see Vancouver trading Schenn for Meloche though and with Calgary being a divisional rival adding a 3rd might not be enough.

They have 19 Goals between them so far this season. Besides Matthew Tkachuk & Colin White will Score a combined 60+ Goals per season

FLA needs a 1LD and don’t have Cap Space to bring Duclair back. Duclair hasn’t played all season, so his value isn’t at its highest and they get Cole Schwindt back.

With his Cap Hit and the Minutes he Plays, Hanifin > Reinhardt who isn’t Great Defensively

No Way. Hanifin >= to Hampus Lindholm

Hanifin literally just turned 26, so has 7-9 Good Years (including his best years) ahead of him. Reinhart has maybe 4-6 Good Years left

Hanifin is a decent 4D you have him valued WAY too high

That’s your opinion. Some Guys prefer Hanifin over Chychrun who is apparently worth Three 1sts. I give the edge to Chychrun, but Hanifin’s far more reliable; Chychrun’s injury prone

You realize duclair hasn’t played a game. Plus the whole Florida team struggled early on. But you surely can’t base your logic off this season.yes I would take hanifan on fla but not for this trade. Not even a 1v1 for Reinhart.

You admitted to the issue in the trade in the second sentence. While sure he would probably PLAY on the first pair, that doesn't mean he IS a 1LD. Right now Forsling plays there, but we don't call him a first pairing dman skill wise.
Hanifin is a good #3 on most teams. But his value is greatly inflated here. I say this as a neutral party in the discussion. I disagree strongly that Hanifin is better than Chychrun and Lindholm. He's in the same tier, but he's below them. Look at the Lindholm trade and drop a bit of value. IMO that's roughly the same as a 1 for 1 swap for Reinhart, maybe add a 2nd for the contract difference and positional difference.

Hanifin and Reinhart are pretty close in value. Hanifin is number 2 or 3 on most teams including Florida where he'd be number 2.

Hampus Lindholm essentially brought a 1st + TWO 2nds. We’ll call the former 1st RD Pick and the Cap Dump a Wash

Lindholm was 3 years older than Hanifin at the time and came with an expiring contract. Hanifin is more valuable because he’s Younger and coming with a Cap Hit at least $1.5-2.5mil/yr under market Value

Reinhardt brought a LATE 1st + an okay Prospect. FLA needing to dump Cap Space and Duclair coming off of injury makes him worth a 2nd + 3rd/4th, so combined I think they’re worth Hanifin, but I threw Cole Schwindt in as a replacement RW Prospect who both FLA & CGY Highly covet, but we want to swap Mackey & Mahura as part of the package

Seems more than fair to me. I’m waiting to get hate from @Ledge_And_Dairy as well as other Flames Fans for even Proposing moving Hanifin at all. Many believe it equates to Blasphemy

On a Run & Gun Offence First Team, Hanifin can contribute 0.60-0.80PPG just like Ekblad & Montour who are both career 0.50PPG producers, whereas Hanifin is a career 0.40PPG producer on a Defence First Team. Hanifin put up 0.60PPG last season and is 0.44PPG this season in a Team struggling to generate offence

Given his Age, Position & Cap Hit, Hanifin is more valuable than Reinhart.

Another Poster suggested adding a 2nd on top of Reinhart, so I say throw in Schwindt and that’s Reinhart + Duclair for Hanifin, but we want Mackey (American) and Mahura (Albertan) swapped at the same time.

I think it's a poor trade for Florida personally. While they should be in the market for a top 4 defenseman (or 2) selling a large portion of their offense to do so is not necessary. Florida can activate Duclair from LTIR and remain cap compliant as long as Hornqvist stays on LTIR. On a further note, due to Hornqvist coming off the cap as well as over 5M in buyout penalties coming off their cap next year Florida is far better off keeping their 2 top 6 forwards and adding a ~5M top 4 defenseman. Also Calgary is taking on 4.5M in cap with term in this trade and drastically downgrading their d-core.

As for the overall value of the trade I don't think it's bad, I just don't think it makes sense

I also think, similar to Jan Rutta, Schenn is going to get closer to 3M on the market and Calgary absolutely cant afford that. He's also not an ideal top 4 defenseman and is more like a #5 that can play more minutes if need be. Kind of like Justin Holl in Toronto

FLA only has $1.362mil in Cap Space available, which is all the LTIR that remains and that’s with Horn on LTIR

ARI’s Ghost and WAS’s Erik Gustafsson and Dmitry Orlov, PIT’s Doumoulin, CBJ Gavrikov, DET Maata and NJD’s Graves are the best available Pending UFA’s and Hanifin is much better than those guys. Connor Mackey still has a shot to impress as well, but I think he shots himself in the foot in CGY and with Sutter

We can afford to move Hanifin, especially with Weegar signed to an extension. We still have Zadorov, Kylington & Poirier too or we can sign one of the guys above

If Schenn, like Gudbranson, will cost more than $2mil/yr, it’s a pass and we might as well look for a younger & cheaper solution like Holl or Meloche

Schenn would be a rental for depth this year. If we want to resign him (possible) and feel he's worth 3 million a year (unlikely) we certainly can afford it. You do realize we can trade other players to do it? Players like Toffoli, Tanev and Backlund who are all older players making over 4 million/year with only next year left on their contracts.

Cap space is fluent, not set in stone. Florida called up Denisenko and claimed Casey Fitzgerald off waivers because they could. Florida could easily go down to a 22 man roster by sending 2 players down to reach 3M and activating Duclair. All that would take is 2 contracts that together average $818,688, or 1 league min contract + a 887k+ contract

I am not arguing that Hanifin is better than those players, however you are not accounting for the 2 forwards lost in your proposal. For example Reinhart + Graves > Hanifin alone

Disagree completely on Hanifin being expendable. At the very least not until we know what's going on with Kylington. Calgary has been absolutely brutal whenever one of our top 4 is missing, but when all 4 of them play we are one of the top teams in the league. Our Points% with all 4 playing is .641%, that would currently place us 1st in the division and 2nd in the conference. That's not even accounting for our poor goaltending this year, if we were getting a .920+ sv% from Markstrom we might be top 3 in the league.

Tanev and Backlund both have trade protection and are both well worth their cap hits, Toffoli is playing like a 6-7M player. Yes you can technically trade out a good player on your roster for what is clearly an inferior player but I tend to categorize stupid decision making as something that shouldn't happen and therefore ignore it as a possibility

They’re all Trade Bait for Next Season’s TDL, including Lindholm, Hanifin, Dube and Zadorov. If any of them won’t sign extensions, preferably Team Friendly, and/or a Trade offer makes sense, they’re all expendable.

As much as loyalty and treating Players as Human Beings is important, at the end of the day, the NHL is a Business

Toffoli isn't a 6-7 million dollar player. Even if he was then we'd either be getting the return for a 6-7 million player (not selling low / giving him away) or keeping him and trading someone else.

But if someone thinks a 31 year old UFA with a career best 58 points 7 years ago is worth that much there's a very good chance we will trade him. We have 7 UFAs and 3 RFAs in 2025 who will all be in need of new contracts. That's 10 players, 12 if you count Kylington and Rooney who aren't currently on the roster too. And that's not even counting prospects like Dustin Wolf who will be RFA then too. Some of those players are going to have to move or take large paycuts in order to be able to resign the others. Moving 1 or 2 of the highest paid players over 30 years old a year before they become UFAs would be a whole lot smarter than losing them for nothing as UFAs.

You also completely ignored the part where I said it was unlikely we'd want to resign Schenn for 3 mil AAV.

Yes Mox, Toffoli most certainly is. We’re getting such good value out of him. Compare him to Sam Reinhart who makes $6.5mil. Toffoli has scored more Goals and a Higher PPG than Reinhart.

Toffoli’s better than Boeser, Kevin Hayes or JVR too. Better than Mangiapane at $5.8mil, Huberdeau at $5.9mil and Kadri at $7mil as well. He’s 2x better than Josh Anderson at $5.5mil 😜

1.00PPG guys are all over $8mil/yr now. Fiala will be one of the last under $8mil, unless under Team control as an RFA

Better than Reinhart? Career stats alone say different. Then factor in age and the much greater versatility Reinhart brings since he can play Center (Toffoli can't), is a pretty good goal scorer and a good playmaker (Toffoli is not). Yeah he's better than Boeser, Hayes and JVR but that's nothing special. Mangiapane does a whole lot more than just score goals someone else set up and he's in a shutdown role this year not an offensive role. Put Mangiapane in a top 6 offensive role and he'll score a lot more (35 goals last year more than Toffoli has ever gotten) but put Toffoli in a shutdown role and he'll be a liability. Huberdeau is still adjusting to Sutter and the Flames. Anderson is another who does a lot more than just score goals someone else set up. And Kadri is a center who again does a whole lot more than just find a soft spot to shoot from and let others do most of the work.

1.00 PPG isn't nearly as rare as it used to be. There are something like 48 of them this year.

Right, but ledge said he was playing “like” a $6-7mil/yr player, which he is and since he’s playing like Tarasenko, might get Tarasenko type money on his next contract, albeit on a short term, similar to old Guys Pavelski or Malkin

If he does then great for him but it won't be in Calgary which is exactly why we should trade him this summer. The team needs to get younger not spend even more money on expensive old players.
