Yeah sJ is going to completely ruin their cap situation for that insanely incredible return. Wow. Believe it or not, teams do not exist to help the Leafs.

Are you suggesting Schenn is worth Sandin? If so then there is no possibility of a reasonable conversation.bb

How else do they move him? He's never going to be this valuable again and they have to rebuild. At his age with his health issues, he's the riskiest contract in the league.

Eating 5.75 mil a year for 4 more years on the front runner for the Norris for this kind of return is not smart. sharks are better off keeping him to sell tickets and build around him. for 20-22% retentions it’s reasonable 50% you would have to add a lot!

I didn't mean to come across as this is a fair deal or not. Nearly stating that keeping him is not a great idea. He's not part of the future, has a major cap hit and he'll never be this valuable again. If you move him, it's going to be hard to get much at full cap hit. So I think major retainment would have to be considered. At the right cost of course.

Yes, as I stated in different response above, I don't mean come across as haggling about fairness of this trade. More just contemplating how you'd move him, if you decided to. I think it would have to be assumed that major retainment would be needed. What you get for it is a mystery to me. There can be decent arguments in sides.

To me, his age, past injuries and the high cap hit make him a major risk. This season he's been lights out, but does anyone think he's going to maintain this level of play for 4 years? Or whatever is left? It's highly unlikely based off all comparables in the league. At 5.25 it's certainly less risky but still with a fair amount. When the decline comes, it's not long before 5.25 million is a problem contract. So what is that value? I don't know, I am not sure I'd do it if I was a GM. But I generally try to be patient and cautious.

I get your reasoning. my arguement is if we retain 50% at his current value the return would have to be stronger. a Norris candidate at less than 6 mil per season for 4 1/2 seasons would be insanely valuable and therefor should return at the very least 1 top 4 D who is close to nhl ready, a b level forward and a 1st. Karlsson at the very least is worth a lot in ticket sales and revenue for a team struggling to bring in fans through a rebuild. moving him would cost us revenue plus paying 50% of his salary for him to play for another team would be brutal IMO.
now Liljegren Minten and a 1st for Karlsson 40% would be a fair deal!

It does carry the risk though that if he's not a top pair defender anymore at 5.25 million, how much term is left when he's not a cost effective contributor anymore? It will almost certainly happen sometime and not very far off. 5.25 for how he looked the last 2 seasons was a good deal but not a great one. This year it's fantastic but when is not? That's the risk that needs to be considered. You just can make such a big decision without taking what happens down the road into account.

you have to consider he is only 32 and finally healthy and all his injuries in the past, he is playing like a top 5 D in the leauge and his deal ends in his age 36 season not 40, he should be able to maintain this level throughout his deal if he remains healthy.
there is risk he regresses as he ages but there is also risk. one of the prospects or picks ever hit their potential! that’s the way this game goes!

Canucks decline. They would ask for a pretty big package if you're asking them to retain $10 mil and take on Murray. If they move a guy like Demko/Garland/Boeser, it is to create cap space, not to retain and add a large contract at the same time.

Murray has one more year after this year. While Murray may be playing better than Demko this year, Demko was better the 3 years prior. Demko has 3/4 good seasons the past 4 while Murray has 1/4. Demko was also playing injured during his one bad season (this year). I'd rather bet on Demko bouncing back from 1 bad season as opposed to Murray finding his former self from 5 years ago (especially if he has to find that play in front of Vancouver's defense).

You aren't getting Liljegren and personally I would likely move Knies over Minten. And not sure how 10% more retention would cost a 2nd 1st. Seems rather excessive.
