Anaheim surely says No. We just signed Ryan Strome; unless he tells us he wants to go elsewhere, we'll stand behind him. And we're for sure not going to sign him and then pay 50% of his salary not to have him on our team. What kind of optics would that present?

Adam Henrique is on the table for either of your 2023 firsts, with a 2023 third and 50% retention. If Blais is a cap dump to you, it won't cost you anything to include him.

Anaheim says no and probably Arizona too since they want 3 firsts without retention for 50% you probably need like 5 1sts.

I hear ya, but Strome hasn't exactly lit it up for Anaheim, and at half the cap hit he's attractive to NYR to play with Panarin. Plus Anaheim will be a cap floor team for a few years. 1st round pick is for the retention. Could easily substitute someone else for Blais.

Arizona is crazy with their asks. They may overplay the hand. Retention no big deal to Arizona since they'll never spend to cap.

That's 10+ million in retention for a 1st, and then trading Strome for a bottom 6 player.

You've got some MAJOR homer goggles on if you think that's a fair deal.

Anaheims not footing the bill for you to get Strome back.

Not homer goggles. Asking seriously, what value does Strome bring to Anaheim right now?

Yeah, but retaining for 2 years is one less retention slot, so one less spot where they can use to get assets off struggling players that they acquire to flip. I overexaggerated with the 5 1sts but their 3 1st asks isn't going to get lower if you ask retention, will only increase.

I'm sure Anaheim will be trying to move towards contention after this year, so he will help then. If they are open to trading him as it may take a few more years to be competitive, they aren't going to be retaining 50% just based off the real dollars.

Understood, but they are almost at the point of needing to take best and final. If they hold him past this year it's diminishing returns. Rangers in essence buying cap space, not unlike Yandle deal years ago.

Deal was Yandle (with retention) for John Moore, Anthony Duclair 1 & 2. Zach jones will be better than John Moore. Kravstov is comparable in prospect level to where duclair was, plus a 1 & and a 2 and another young D in Hajek.

Yeah, they may lower their ask but with no retention, Chychrun's deal is already considered to be cheap.

I think what you're missing is that retention doesn't hurt Arizona, it helps. Totally different than Anaheim, who could pivot and spend. No chance Arizona spends anything until at least they get out of Mullett Arena.

You can spin the retention how you want to to justify it to yourself, but you're still gonna pay for Arizona retaining 50% for multiple years.

Probably remove either Zach Jones, or Kravstov or 2nd.

Again basing it off return for Yandle. Chychrun signed 1 year longer,

I think that what you're missing is that every penny overspent by Arizona hurts a team playing in a 6,000 seat arena. This isn't the uber-rich NY Rangers we're talking about. And Anaheim operates on an internal cap, and you completely ignored the point I made in my earlier post about the reason why Anaheim isn't trading Strome.

Not sure exactly how much all those guys are worth but let's just say the second is removed.

They could do three things with their cap space + retention slot:

1) take unwanted contracts with payment and if they find their game flip them as rentals (retention is going to be needed)
2) sign ufas who are struggling or looking to prove themselves to 1-year deals, to attract them to Arizona they will have to overpay them, then they can potentially flip them at the deadline.
3) facilitate trades for payment

They could yield anything from a 5th to 1sts in each of those years, so a 2nd definitely won't cut it especially with them having to pay those real dollars.

Chychrun already has value and a ton at that, so it's not really worth it for them to retain on him if the package isn't getting significantly increased. The contracts that they often take are usually front-loaded vs Chychrun's backloaded contract, so they aren't paying as much in real dollars compared to the cap-hit. This allows them to reach the cap-floor while also keeping a lower player salary.

He may not be no pace for what he used to do in New York, but he is still on pace for 40 pts this season, different coach, better overall team next year should see him bouncing back up to the 50 point range.

Outside of what he may represent in the future to the Ducks as a player, trading him away with 50% retention in the same season we signed him to a 5x5 is a very public admittance that our GM made a huge mistake with one of his first signings, and guarantees no UFA of worth signs with the team as long as he is here.

Strome will be fine here, with our coach this season pulling line combinations out of a ticket tumbler he has had trouble settling in. Offering a future 1st and a bottom 6 player for us to retain over 10 million until the 2027 season on a top 6 player is outright insulting.

You are so outrageously undervaluing the players and retention slots of Anaheim and Arizona here.

Rangers would likely be carrying bonuses into next year and with no cap to sign their RFA, and no big cap leaving....this makes no sense for the Rangers....Not saying the Ducks or Coyotes would do the trades.
