I think Kappanen would be a nice fit in a return for Miller, he’s a Rutherford guy

This is terrible. JT is on pace for 30+ goals and 40 assists. This doesn't benefit the Canucks at all in the return.

If Miller didn't sign that contract I would take this. I don't want to deal with an expensive guy with character issues for like 7 years - and who knows what we would have to do to fit him under the cap next year

EDIT: Saw part 2. I'll still pass due to contract and character issues

3 expiring contracts and a 2nd for a guy who's new 7 yr deal hasn't even started and we're already totally frustrated with. This is a hell of deal. The cap space it opens alone is a huge win.

Under a more structured coach and great leadership Miller could turn back into a 90 point player. The back side of the contract will always be bad but for Pitt that represents the rebuilding yrs post Cros, Malkin, Letang so it could be worth the risk.

To have to spend it again and fill his production? 8m isn't bad for his production in anyway. Maybe a deal like this is more fitting for Boeser who the FO is exploring moving.

No it's not. Who is replacing that production? Are you frustrated the team didn't trade him or his deal? 8m is completely fine for what he is producing. The real issues are Myers OEL and Pearson clogging the cap along with the cap holds of Holtby, Jake and Halak's bonus.

Your understanding of how to build an NHL roster seems very short sighted.

...or use the space to take on bad deals for picks and retool through the draft

Swapping Miller with another UFA won't make VAN a contender (nor will Miller), realistically they need a heavy retool

The Canucks are terrible. His production isn't helping anything. We are no where near the playoffs. So his productions means we get a worse draft pick and thats it. Not to mention the rumoured turmoil he causes within the room. It's going to take a number of yrs before it turns around in Van, at which point Miller's contract will be our new anchor.

Lol I'm glad you deduced that from 3 comments. I've already noted on this pt 1/2 thread and others the Canucks passed up an offer for Miller last year they should have taken if they wanted to rebuild. This offer sucks value wise for JT. It's more fitting for a player like Boeser.

It will take more to get Miller. Canucks won't sell him for cheap. You obviously see how he could be a good add in Pitt. Like I said, you get Boeser in a move like this.

When you are concerned about win now moves with this Canucks team yes your understanding of roster building isn't good. Boeser and Miller have similar values btw. The liability of Miller is the last 4 yrs of his deal, right when we hope this team is good. Boeser's deal at least ends soonish.

It's not really the production I'm worried about though. Maybe I was a little too vague. I just don't want to trade for a guy who clearly has a huge character issue that just signed for 7 or 8 years or whatever it is. If it was one year sure maybe you take a flier on him and see if his attitude changes. I just don't think the risk is worth the reward for a cap strapped team.

I would say that's a fair concern but I also think the Miller stuff in Van so blown away out of proportion. People nationally are on him for yelling at his goalie to get off. Does that mean you have irredeemable character issues?

He wants to win, he cares a lot and he is a fiery character. Put him with Crosby and Malkin and I'd expect him to do really well. He frustrated by the Canucks as we all are. There is an exceptional opportunity to get a guy who can score 80+ with ease for next nothing. Obv it'd be to a win now team though.

From what it sounded like it was a lot more than just yelling at his goalie to get off the ice. But you could be right - I mean I'm not watching every game so it could just be getting blown out of proportion. Still - I'm not sure I want to take that risk(even if it's small) to bring in a big contract with long term for the Top 6 when the issue for the Pens is clearly the bottom 6 forward group. I think that 8mil can be spent better. It would be great for this year - if it was a rental for 5.25 mil I would be all over it.

It's this yr, next yr and maybe the yr after for Pitt. You kinda need to take a swing. Whats the downside? Miller replaces Zucker and Doumolin's money.

Its a pretty incredible opportunity too because he can play center too if you want.

Getting him for this year would be great - like I said I have no issue with getting him for this year. It's the new contract that I don't want - due to money and character issues(even if they aren't that serious). I have no issues with the Pens taking a swing. I feel like I am actually in the minority in being okay giving up a 1st round pick to compete and give us the best chance of winning now. But not on Miller with the new contract.

The downside is not being able to make a balanced team next year. Sure Dumo and Zucker coming off the books would cover Miller. But you also need to think about the person they have to sign to replace Dumo - and the raise that Jarry is going to get. And maybe Blueger too. But on top of that it leaves no money to improve the 3rd line - which is without a doubt the Pens biggest issue right now. So spending even more money on the already fantastic Top 6 is just going to exacerbate that problem. Obviously just my opinion, but I would rather divide that money over a couple people. Zucker/Malkin/Rust has been one of the best lines in the league - you could try to resign him for like 4mil and then bring in another good 4mil forward for the 3rd line. That would make the team better than Miller and a league minimum guy in my opinion. You could maybe put him at 3C? But that's a lot of money for a 3C and I don't think he would be happy about playing there
