Every trade for Timo avoids Knies but thats what itll take for TML to compete in a trade

I actually think this is too light for Timo. Knies is a nice prospect but severely overrated. Late 1st, late 2nd and a B+ prospect…. SJS could surely do better.

Meier is highly likely to be a rental, his QO is going to make it a tough negotiation any team with his rights will have to put up big money on a long term deal and if they don't he waits for his QO and then walks to FA and can go where ever he wants. He's having a good year on a terrible team, if he goes to a good team and lights it up, why wouldn't he demand north of 9.5? He's guaranteed 10 million or free agency and as an FA what do you think he's worth ahead of the cap rising? If he really likes his situation he may accept less but he's not getting less than 8.5. There are few contenders with that kind of cap space.

How / why is Knies overrated?
And what team will offer more than that for Meier? Not many b/c it’s already an overpay for a rental; as others have pointed out - no (or very few) contender has room for $9-10 M player next year. A non contender could trade for him but it doesn’t make a ton of sense to give up 3 prime assets if you’re not even a playoff team

From what I’ve seen of him playing, nothing he really does jumps off the screen at me. Besides appearing to have an NHL body, he just looks like he will be a solid middle 6 guy, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s just, he’s got bigger hype than that, and I do not agree with it.

Well, the unique thing about Timo is that he is actually NOT a rental.

I’ll explain how; If San Jose somehow does not trade him and goes into next offseason without an extension in place, could they still trade him? Yes, of course they can, just like Fiala and DeBrincat.

So, same thing goes for the team trading for Timo at the deadline this year. If he doesn’t extend - he is still an asset that can be flipped to recoup whatever was spent on him in assets.

That is a HUGE benefit that you don’t get with guys that are on expiring UFA deals.

But trading him now is way different than trading him to a team that'll pay him what he wants will limit the bidding war and be lower than what you pay at the deadline. It's a major risk. I would definitely be okay if they trade for Meier, depending on the price of course but if they win then who cares.

The comparable to Fiala and Debrincat isnt really the same, sure both were also pending RFAs, but neither had the QO of 10 sheets. Thats going to make trading those RFA rights extremely difficult and making it more likely that he doesnt get qualified and goes to UFA

You guys are both reading too much into the QO - odds are he’s extended by whatever team acquires him and even if he’s not, whoever he is traded to NEXT year will also extend him. Regardless of which, it would be less than his QO.

But either way, he’s technically not a rental.

Not many teams can afford a 10 million dollar QO and if they don't tender it before July 1 he's FA

Nearly Every team in the NHL will have $10m available in the offseason. Again, you’re reading too much into it.

The NHL had 10 teams using LTIR before the regular season began. You aren't paying attention
