The Hayes deal is interesting. I heard rumours about PHI buying him out but trading him at 50% retained could be favourable for both teams. PHI would probably rather pay that than spread his buyout over 6 years and COL gets Hayes for cheaper than they would be able to sign him for

I think the Avs would prefer to keep Compher but I'm sure they would throw in a pick instead

-Didn't the Flyers already give up on Myers once? I get that you take him back for the cap hit, but I think Tampa chips in more than a 5th for Braun at $1M.

-I think JVR getting a 2nd will be tough - I think a team will give up value equal to a 2nd if you retain him down to $1.75M, but Philly's splitting that value with a 3rd team.

-Probably could do a little better for absorbing Horny's cap hit, but not gonna quibble. Get an asset for eating cap, works for me.

-I get why the Avs might pass on this for cap reasons, but it's also a terrible deal for the Flyers. Hayes is still a very productive player at 30, and you're giving him up for a pending UFA in Compher, a post-hype Martin Kaut, and a B-tier prospect in Ambrosio - and on top of that, you're eating $3.6M for the next 4 seasons? Bad value for the Flyers on a useful player. If you want to move on, move him this summer when more teams might be happy taking a 3x$7.1M swing on a guy like Hayes instead of having to pay 7x$7M for whoever this summer's JT Miller or Nazem Kadri is.

The cap is expected to rise about $1 miilion for next season. At $3.5 million for just 3 seasons Hayes is pretty strong asset. I don't see who they could get comparable to him for that price tag quite honestly. Even Compher may cost more. If the Avalanche felt they couldn't make that work they could trade him again later. They essentially swapped his contract for Compher's with cost certainty and little more offensive firepower lower in the lineup.

Canes already have a better version of JVR coming back next month without trading a 2nd. They don’t have $3.5m of cap space.

I mean I'd rather keep Compher and I'm wary about the cap raise like @coga16 and @UpsideDownQue but if the cap does work in our favor I would definitely be interested.

Myers was in Philly before and from what it seems the only place he had any success. I wouldn't say the Flyers gave up on Myers when he was likely the centerpiece of the trade for Ryan Ellis when it happened. At that point in time Ellis was "healthy".

If JVR keeps playing the way he is he'll get a 2nd round pick. He's exactly the type of player contending teams should be looking to add. He's a power play specialist who gets to the net and gets good deflection goals. At $3.5 million he should be no big deal to acquire for many teams around the deadline.

Hayes is a good player but if the Flyers are hell bent on making him be a first line center then it's not going to work. He's 30. He is what he is. A productive player but not one teams are going to clammer for during the summer to say they saved on term over a player like Kadri or JT Miller. Quite honestly, Hayes hasn't shown he has that "IT" factor for a team to justify paying him $7.1 million. He's a solid $4.5 to $5 million 2nd or 3rd line center that the Avs get for $3.5 in the deal. The Flyers get cap relief better than a buyout and a cleared deck so to speak. The Flyers appear to be several seasons away from contending. They have numerous long-term contracts they need to get out of but are most likely stuck with. Hayes is one they can move on from and they should.

A big key to the Flyers re-build is going to be clearing salary cap space and using their ownerships big pockets to leverage that cap space into other assets. They can do a larger scale version of what Arizona has been doing and they don't have to be scared off by actual dollars or insurance coverage on injured players. They can do that while playing a hard nose Tortorella/Flyers hockey on brand maybe even squeezing a playoff trip or 2 in during the rebuild. Ultimately, they need to differentiate between key building pieces and assets that can be moved for other picks. They keep signing all of their draft picks to 8 year deals lately when they're not necessarily someone who should be viewed as a core component. Good players but not stars.

I made a couple acgms with Hayes as the target about a week ago. It gets really tight next year, but I think they can swing it if they go very short term on Newhook and/or Byram.

It's definitely worth thinking about imo.

Why? Obviously his stock has fallen but Philly takes no risk getting him here.

Well in this scenario theres no risk yeah. Even if Myers werent to play for example, philly still gets a 5th for a guy whos likely going to be sold at the deadline anyway. If Myers was the only piece they are getting back, no matter what they are giving up to get him, it doesnt make much sense. They waived Myers previously and he didn't work out. I just dont see them taking a shot at him a second time, especially given phillys blueline. Doesnt really fit in on their back end.

He's be a younger replacement to Braun and for a team starting Nick Seeler sometimes he's still an upgrade. The Flyers aren't the team that waived him. I believe Nashville and Tampa both waived him and the Flyers only reason for declining him then was salary cap constraints. Given that his deal is expiring the Flyers could look to re-sign him at a much lower AAV and explore him as a 3rd pair dman going forward. He could also find him prior success with Travis Sanheim.

Yea its tight but realistically they arent going to get a 2C for cheaper than 3.5M next year. I think if they move Girard then it lets them fill out the rest of the forward core better which is a better way to spend his 5M imo

understandable. also he was extended by tampa. after this year he has a 1 year contract at a $1,400,000 cap hit

I'd rather not move Girard. That's why I think option A is to go 1 or 2 years on Newhook/Byram and kicking the can to the next year when we get a real rise in the cap.

I absolutely think the team needs to address forward depth though. And this would be cheap in terms of both salary and acquisition cost. And I also think Hayes at 3.5M is movable in the event Newhook takes the next step and makes him expendable. I think it's a legit option.
