Don’t like only having only two thirds as our first pick of the draft, we also have good centre depth. And we can’t play O’Reilly on the second line at left wing, he does better at center.

Read my argument here as to why Holl is not being traded - https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/660165?post_id=3734494

ROR would be a great add for sure though.

Interesting take! I assume it will be Niemela/Robertson/Minten. Steeves is basically NHL ready though but I had him valued lower based on age and potential. And St Louis should be back to being competitive next year. Big sell this year and back to being competitive next year. I think St Louis is in a good spot overall.

Honestly, Leafs should go after Barbashev instead of O'Reilly.
He checks most boxes for the Leafs needs and will cost less than ROR.

- A substantial upgrade for LW depth and upgrade for the middle-six.
- Gritty forward with playoff experience.
- Plays on the PK
- Plus he can play at C position if needed.

ROR is the guy to get and transform our 3rd line into a much better offensive unit that also is elite defensively. However, you can't trade Holl. Once again this season is proving the importance of having loads of depth at defence and trading a top 4 defenceman is just dumb.

I think that is undervalu for a guy like ROR. I would think he fetches a return similar to Giroux last year

Those lines are not definitive. Just my take on it. He can always play 3C with Kerfoot and Jarnkrok on his wings, move Robertson up with JT and Marner, and Kampf down to 4C with Holmberg/Engvall. Many different ways to put him in the lineup.

In terms of having two-thirds as the first pick in the draft, they can always trade away players to accumulate picks if need be, or move up in the draft by trading lower picks for higher picks. But the way the leafs have been drafting recently I would not be worried about how late those picks are. They will find a future NHLer or two with the amount of scouting/development staff they have

He is having a great season, yes, but I do think he is easily replaceable. He plays a role in Keefe's system that is easily manageable. He does play a lot of minutes but his main job is to get out there and make the easy/simple play/support his D-partner. You put similar guys on the team like Liljegren/Timmins in those higher minutes and I think that they do just as well as Holl.

Obviously my opinion and people can agree or disagree with it but I think that Holl isn't the guy that Leafs fans are making him out to be these last 1-2 month. reminding me of when everyone was excited about him in the "Bubble" season

Steeves/Minten + 1st + 3rd + somebody to balance the cap I think is reasonable.

Liljegren is hurt again, Brodie has missed time, Rielly is hurt, Muzzin will likely never play again, Benn has been hurt twice, Mete is hurt, etc etc. Heading into the playoffs do you really want Hollowell to play big minutes if someone gets hurt?

You don't trade Holl, period.

I agreed with this. And then I looked up Barbashevs playoff history and he virtually has no points in every single playoff run he has ever been in. I haven't watched him, so my opinion is purely from the spread sheet. But it made me cool on the idea of getting him.

The idea of RHD and LHD is blown out of proportion I think. The media puts a spin on it to make it so a guy like Radko Gudas (RH) is so much more valuable than his comparable LHD but at the end of the day they are both defenceman and could play either side if need be.

They are NHLers, I am sure that they would be able to adjust to playing on the opposite side. Look at the Detorit Red Wings when they were most successful in the 2000's, I do not think they had one RHD.

Like Dman linked to the leafs rn are Myers, Schenn, Dumba and Orlov (first three RHD, last one LHD). I think the consensus is that Orlov or Dumba are the best D-man from that list. The spin the media would most likely put on these rumours is that Leafs would have to pay a "premium" for Dumba bc he is RH. Well then why not just get Orlov for cheaper bc they are comparable?

A bit of a rant here but I don't think I will ever understand paying a premium for a guy or saying he has more value just because the way he shoots. We do not do this with forwards or goalies (catch left vs right) so why do it with D-man

* Very similar with goalies actually because way more lefty gloves in the league then righty gloves (only 6-7 in the league so should they be worth more than lefty gloves)

Holl is just there for the Cap. Hirvonen is projected to be a pretty good bottom 6 player (PK + reliable defensively with some offensive upside)

OK, it's crazy to trade one of three top PK Dman, and a Dman that plays 21m a night.

Yup, had the big goal in the first minute of game 4 of the sharks series but then literally nothing else notable offensively.

He's not strictly a LW though.
Barbashev does play a majority on LW but he takes a good amount of faceoffs.
He's definitely not ROR caliber level, but he is capable of playing C in some situations and has done so in the past.

1 - Ehh no. Holl will not be there for any reason. Cap is Toronto's problem. They can't just throw anything they want over for nothing. If you want to move some cap over, fine, but it will be something of some sort of use to the Blues.

2 - I'm aware of Hirvonen, and he's a skilled guy. The problem is he's small AND slower than NHL average, and that is not the type of C the Blues typically insist on having. If he was one of those things, maybe they'd be okay with him. Being both doesn't fit their mold.

That is true.
But if he plays on a line with Tavares and Marner, that would definitely elevate his play and scoring compared to playing 3rd line in STL.

I wrote this yesterday:

I don't know who needs to here this but Holl isn't being shipped off this year.

He is 2nd on our team in ice time, behind only Rielly. He has more minutes than Marner and Matthews and all our other D. Our team is 3rd in the league, doesn't give up many goals at all. Hasn't lost in over a month in regulation. Holl is not being shipped off unless some super star is coming back.
I thought they should have traded him in the offseason and gotten a guy like Luke Schenn to add more physicality to our D. Holl has proven me and most of us wrong.

Holl will not be traded and his not a cap dump.

Leafs cap situation is also perfectly fine since Muzzin has been LTIR and should remain like that for the year.
