Right. Okay.
Toronto trade is fine IMO - probably would make more sense to do a sign and trade in the off season though so they know for sure they can retain him
The Ottowa trade is terrible for SJS, why would they do that?
The reimer trade is whatevs

I agree about the ottowa trade, what is the point of moving karlsson if that's all we get back in return.

It's easier to trade Meier by the deadline. With retention, he'll be worth 3m. If it's not the fact that he'll have 50% retained AND is an RFA in the offseason, it'll be the fact that he's a 30+ goal scoring power forward driving his value. Better to send him to a contending team desperate for his playstyle and willing to pay big money for him.

SJS isn't going to trade Karlsson unless there's retention, and they probably want to get to half. Sure, they'd take on Zaitsev, but its only for two years as opposed to keeping Karlsson at 12m for another 5.
As for his value, sure, hes having a comeback year, but he's still old and injury prone. he's a wild card. And if SJS is going to rebuild and *possibly* move MORE assets, Zaitsev won't hurt their position.

Loved Reimer but he is not the piece we need in net. Would consider trading Raanta for a better rental goalie.

so the sharks should retain over 25 million and take a 9 million dollar cap dump without getting a first or a prospect back? My issue isn't with trading karlsson, its why trade one of our best players for something that doesn't really advance the rebuild.

Pretty sure Reimer won’t be traded to the Canes this year, since they already have 3 NHL goalies. Management is already going to have a tough choice with how Koochie is playing, and Freddie coming back shortly, do they try to send Raanta down to Chicago or do they trade him and hope for the best either way. As much as I love Reimer, I could see him being brought back next season as a UFA if the Canes don’t feel like resigning Freddie, but this season he won’t be a Cane.

Him doing well this season isn't much of a selling point. He's 32 and very injury prone. Hasn't played a full season since he was on Ottawa. Like i said, he's kind of a gamble. You'd still be getting a 2nd and a 5th in a very stacked draft class. Could move the 5th up, if its not enough.

I agree his value isn't that high, but its likely the sharks would try to be competitive again within 3 years which would men 5-10mil dead cap, IMO it would just be better to keep him if we wouldn't be getting a first or a prospect back for trading someone who is in the norris race and we retain 30 million on him. I mean just dumping zaitsev with a 9mil contract would cost a 2nd alone

sure, you can always keep him, but it's clear where his mind is. He doesn't want to play for them. He's 32, and they *should* be entering a short rebuild. The return on him won't be high, and it may be a case of taking whatever you can get. if i'm wrong, i'll retract

I think Ottawa would jump on that and you could easily add Lassi Thomson and the WSH 2024 2nd rounder. Ottawa would still jump.

After the Burns trade if Grier retains $5,750,000 on Karlsson I don't think he will a job anymore.

You aren’t getting Knies, We aren’t giving up a Power Forward for a PWF, rather have both. Topi,Roni,Voit,Kressler are all available just not Mr.Knies Guy

cause you have 0 idea how good Toronto’s prospect pool is, search up Ty Voit if you have a chance, biggest snub from the WJC just cause he plays in the O & not the US

what.. then why wouldn't you move knies? Not interested in any of those. Maybe Voit, but SJS would want size back.

You're essentially moving Knies for someone similar (Meier being better). Meier is also an RFA, who you can keep or move if you don't have the cap.

& Knies is on 3 years of an ELC whilst looking like a 6’3 two-way beast. *Potential Bunting Replacement If Need Be*. The 3 years of Knies is going to be huge to have, he is a projected Top 6 Guy & has amazing upside. Hence why he shouldn’t be moved or imo won’t be moved

Also, leaf fans LOVE to overrate their prospects. For what you guys see in Knies being a High A tier prospect,
the rest of us see him maybe a High B / Low A.

Voit isn't worth much either. He's small, and producing well in the OHL, which isn't hard to do. Small CHL forwards don't tend to translate well into the NHL.

As for the rest, meh. Nothing that warrants anything worth Meier

Knies isn't that close. He's producing well in college, great, but his biggest knock is his skating. He's a weak skater. It'll take some AHL conditioning to get him NHL ready, even then, is he top 6 ready? Big role for a 2nd round player to fill so soon.

He's not the next Marner, which is how high leafs fans love to rate him.

Oh Please, Leaf fans know damn sure he isn’t the next Marner but he is still projected to be a Top 6 Guy, Also his skating is fine, He looked great in the WJC,The Olympics, The NCAA everything has pointed to him being a solid NHL player hence why losing him for a rental is just not good asset management

You missed the part where Meier is an RFA you did see that, right?

IF the leafs couldn't keep him, you could flip him in the offseason after a deep playoff run, or let him get offer sheeted and get some picks. It's a win/win. If you keep him, you keep a 26 year old 35 goal scoring power forward.

That Karlsson trade is maybe WITHOUT retention. Karlsson at 5.75 AAV is an excellent contract

But Ottawa wouldn't be able to absorb all of EK cap hit after 2023-24... so that would bring them in cap hell

This can't happen
