Sucks to lose Casey but the Devils should probably pull the trigger on this if there's a Meier extension not exceeding 8.5m in there.
As much as I'm underwhelmed by Stillman I'd try and move out one of the prospects that loses their wavier exemption for next season.
So that'd preferably be one of Okhotiuk or Thompson (other candidates are Bahl, Walsh and Foote).

We have a logjam of very good defensive prospects; and not many spots open. We’ll have to move them sooner or later

We should not be moving Casey. His stock is only rising. I agree with @tintin on moving our older guys out first. Tyce, Ohotiyuk, Walsh should all be the guys being added to any trades, not a 2nd round RD that is already looking like he could end up as a steal from the draft.

Also Casey is a Devils fan, let’s not do one of our own dirty right after we drafted him

Yeah but Casey is at least another 2 years away. That logjam doesn’t effect our ability to find a place for him just yet.

My big thing with moving one of those other guys is their age. If the sharks go full teardown, Stillman at age 19 is a much better option for their timeline than guys who would be exiting their prime during a long term rebuild.

But it could open our window up even earlier, without having much of any impact long term

I think we have a really good thing going here. I just don’t think this is the year to over commit and chalk us up as contenders. We were barely even expected to make the playoffs this year. I think back to 17/18 where we deceided to go for rentals to just make the playoffs and the following season we all chalked the rebuild as over. Obviously the circumstances are different but the season is still young. I’m not ready to commit to the idea as us being contenders just yet.

I think, barring injuries, we should see what this team can do in the playoffs and make big changes in the off-season. As much as we want a pure goal scorer, we are still one of the highest scoring teams. The off-season imo is when we the organization should take a step back and see what made this season so special, and what do they need to improve to ensure sustained success.

Would take out Casey.

A Meier trade before deadline is going to be very, very unlikely as SJS will not negotiate contract before end of season and will not let another team negotiate before they do. Thus any trade would be without extension and Fitzy has been clear in his take on no expensive rentals.

If SJS would take 2023 1st and lesser prospect, maybe it can be done. But it sounds like they want a return that is cost-prohibitive for most teams.

This whole thing points towards Meier staying in San Jose 2023-24 on 1-year, $8.5m ish deal (after arbitration) and UFA afterwards.

No enough quality in the trade, it’s a bunch of quantity and bad pieces like Blackwood for a better goaltender, a potential 40 goal scorer this year and a 3rd. And they you have the audacity to say if Timo doesn’t extend you take the best piece out other than the 1st. Way off

You want a Jack Eichel price for a Kevin Fiala value

This ain’t even Kevin Fiala value, there’s two cap dumps in it and you try and take Casey out

Well first off, it’s more value than what was given up for Fiala. But Fiala had an extension ready to go as well in LA which made him valuable enough to be worth a mid 1st and a B prospect. Saying A mid/late 1st and a much better prospect is less value is wild especially when the comp for Reimer is probably the the Fleury trade, and in this the Sharks land a 19 y/o former 1st rounder and a young goalie with upside.

AJ can probably be dealt anywhere as a cap dump, with a late pick. That’s fine and he doesn’t need to be included

Mackenzie Blackwood is definitely not a cap dump though… he’s a promising younger goaltender who will spend his time splitting the net with Vitek if he isn’t traded. That’s a pretty wild take saying he’s a cap dump

What young goalie with upside? This is where you are far off. Blackwood has no upside, the guy is awful, brings zero value to a trade. Johnsson is a cap dump. Stillman is a mid level prospect, at best a B, which is being generous.

Fiala was known to not be afforded by Minny driving his value down. He was not traded with a contract, he was signed after and still got a mid 1st a prospect of Casey’s value. There's no incentive for San Jose to make this trade for Meier let alone add Reimer and a 3rd

Blackwood is just over a year from being considered for Team Canada’s Olympic roster. It’s definitely too early to write him off as a guy who brings no value when he walked into the season as the starter and got hurt

Stillman is B, but probably makes the NHL. Blackwood is a platoon NHL goaltender. Both together worth more than a 2nd rounder when using the Fleury comp.

Fiala was known to not be able to be afforded, yes, but Meier is known to not be able to be afforded by most of the league with that 10 million dollar QO. The same thing that worked against Minnesota is working against SJ
Casey is a better prospect, which is why I offered him instead of a more comparable prospect, because it should be slightly more value than the Fiala trade. Frankly could be a better prospect than Luke Hughes, which is why SJ is giving up the pick.

I took out AJ because you’re throwing a hissy fit about a fake trade that will never happen because you don’t like the comps

What do you think you're getting for a 5-8-2, 3.00 GA, .903 %, 34 year old career ufa who could almost never play 40 games?

1. The Kings had a contract extension worked out with Fiala *before* trade.

2. The Sharks will not be allowing teams to negotiate before they do (and they won’t negotiate during season).

Look to Reinhart, Buchnevich returns if extension is not part of deal.
