-It's all moot because Edmonton can't assume this much cap, but hoo boy the value here is terrible. RNH is a very affordable 2C who can play PP1 and on the top-line too if necessary. Barrie is not the best defensive D but is a good QB on the PP and can flourish when paired with a strong defensive LHD. Mike Smith is irrelevant - he's LTIRetired right now, but moving him doesn't do anything for Edmonton, because they'd still have Oscar Klefbom on LTIR (so this is actually a terrible move for them, cap-wise.) Monahan *might* be able to replicate what RNH brings them this season, but part of Hopkins' value is his affordable cap hit *and* extended term - Edmonton isn't finding a UFA that will match that production at that cap hit this summer. Anderson can't play center and actually gets paid more than RNH, so he doesn't do much to help the Oilers (and will be made more or less redundant when Evander Kane returns towards the end of the season). Joel Edmundson would be an interesting piece but even with his addition, this package just is too lopsided in Montreal's favor.

-Another easy pass for the non-Montreal team. First: you're going to need to give a big reward for asking Chicago to eat $1.5M over the next 8 years. Even if we assume that the 2023 1st you're sending them is enough (probably not), you're also sending them a worse player in Barrie (with less term) and sticking them with a quickly declining Brendan Gallagher's $6.5M. Dumping *that deal is going to cost something - which means you're basically offering up an single OK prospect and Tyson Barrie for Seth Jones. No way Chicago pulls the trigger on that deal - even if you think Seth Jones isn't worth his deal, they're not going to move on from him one year into an 8 year deal (and even if they did I'm pretty sure his NMC would keep him out of Montreal.)

Why would they keep Jones? They're going through a 5+ years rebuild, he would be over 33 years old when they're ready to compete.

I don't think they retain, but Arizona did with Ekman-Larsson, so maybe they do.

Zero chance of retention. Don't compare nhl teams to Arizona. Not a comparison any team wants. They're not trading jones until his value rebounds or some years fall off his contract and the cap goes up. If they traded him anytime soon they'd struggle to reach the cap floor. I doubt they're even thinking about trading him right now.

They'd be stupid not to consider retaining if that gets them a much better return. Arizona retained to get a 9th overall pick. And like i said, they're going through a 5+ years rebuild, retaining wouldn't even hurt them.

Did you think they were gonna trade Dach or DeBrincat last summer? Chicago is going on a full rebuild, selling everything to get draft picks. Nothing like we ever saw before. They'll be so good in 5+ years.

Not to mention the PR choice of trading for a player signing him to an 8 year deal then immediately getting rid of him. I'm sure other players would be totally comfortable signing with the hawks after that.

Last time i checked, a player can waive his NMC to be traded where he wants.

No contender can afford his cap hit. Maybe he see MTL as a soon-to-be contender, and wants to join them.

They need a 2C, a top pair RHD and a goalie to start contending. He could be the piece they need at defense.

They're not signing any top end UFA for the next 3 to 5 years. Probably gonna be a new GM and management by then.

Jones dictates where he goes for the duration of the deal - I can't see him itching to get out basically a quarter of the way through the first season of his 8 year deal.

On the other hand, it makes no sense for Chicago to ask him to move. As you said above, Chicago's at least 3-4 years away from contending again. It's going to be much easier to move his deal when half of it's spent (and to potentially retain only 4 years instead of 8). There's no cap reasons for Chicago to need to move him with $21M of Toews & Kane expiring this year, so why would they subject themselves to a lesser return now?

Jones is 28 years old. If he wants to win a cup, he should think about moving to a better team sooner than later.

I don't think it change anything for Chicago to retain 2022 to 2030 or 2026 to 2030. They're probably not gonna use their full cap space before 2027 or 2028. But MTL doesn't need them to retain cap anyway.

As for value, if they can get now what they could get in 4 years, i say they better get it now. Drafting two top 10 picks in 2023 would help their rebuild. Those players would be NHL ready when Korchinski and Nazar are too. Players drafted in 4 years would only be ready in 6 or 7 years.

I have 3 university degrees, I’ve written a book, I’ve raised 3 boys, I coached & scouted for 23 years in paid positions, from 1996 to 2015 I had 400 athletes in my summer hockey camps, I have 17 players that I coached that played AHL or higher, I have 2 current NHL captains that stayed in my house when they were teenagers, I have cell phones to 8 GMS & 11 head or assistant coaches, so I don’t have time no desire no inclination to bother myself with who you fantasize about swapping out for a wife. I’ve been married to my wife for 26 years and I wouldn’t swap or trade her for any other woman has she gave me 3 beautiful children. Here ended the lesson and I can’t wait for your snotty reply.
