Were the Habs distracted by the Pierre Gervais tell all book

Description
Let's be honest, the Habs did not show up last night. Not taking away anything from the Sabres who were just better, the Habs were uncharacteristically bad at both ends of the ice. 3 goals against in the first 2:30 seconds ... That was just a sad performance.

Lucky for the Habs right at the time of their worst showing of the year, Pierre Gervais' book is all anyone in La Belle Province is talking about. Pierre broke the code of silence, the 'Omerta' regarding what happens behind closed doors in those hallowed halls. He did what many consider to be unthinkable, he disclosed personal recollections and his and other people's opinions about Bergevin, Ducharme, Pacioretty, and PK Subban amongst others he knew during his 35 year tenure "in the room", and let's just say it wasn't pretty.

Some don't but I definitely buy that it had an impact on the Habs play. It's a huge loss of focus... It's gotta make all those players and coaches think, "if this becomes the new normal, what stories from my career are gonna come out". I think we know Hockey Players are not choir boys. Like all celebrities, some attention, well managed, is a privilege. Too much, without any sense of control, is a curse. Pierre's book ripped that sense of control away from them in one fowl swoop.

Did the media talking daily about whether Toronto would fire their coach not affect the play of the Maple Leafs players at all? Vancouver?

Regardless of what you say the players are humans and they care what people say. The players ALL knew Pierre Gervais. They ALL felt betrayed. They also all knew Bergy and Claude Julien and a bunch of them knew Therrien.

Did you ever have a mentor at work? Did anyone ever believe in you and give you a career altering chance to take a big step forward? What if the entire world was talking about whether that person was good or bad and if hundreds of reporters were calling you for your opinion about them. Would you defend them? Should you? Does it make you a bad person if you don't? What if you do and it turns out that you are aligning yourself with someone everyone ends up hating?

These people were as important to them as any person you might know and have worked with for a decade or more. I don't care what you think, it matters.

well to put it simpler, probably it matters to some extinct for sure, but my point is more to what extant do it affect the score of the hockey game... thats where we might make correlation when there is none.

Michael Matheson, David Savard, Christian Dvorak, Sean Monahan, Kaiden Guhle, they were all near the bottom of the team in xGF% and they don't have anything to do with the book. The whole team played poorly, not just the players you mentioned. If they keep playing like that until the end of the week after the games against CBJ and CHI, then you may have a point, but for now, it just seems like you're jumping to conclusions too fast.

Do you follow french media or only english? BPM Sports, TVA, RDS? This is not the small deal you are making it out to be. These guys travel with the team on the plane. They work together each and every day. It reverberates all around you. I saw RDS FINALLY started talking about it last night, 48 hours after all of this broke. I guess they finally got the OK from Legal. But it was just that, an event large enough in scope that all journalists from Bell Media were under a GAG ORDER until they got a determination from their legal team.

Check back at my original description. I'm not saying it was the reason they lost, just asking whether it contributed to the loss. Whether it is a distraction.

I follow both and I know they like to make big splashes out of nothing, and when the team is not winning they want something to talk about. If Pacioretty or Therrien or Bergevin were still on the team I guess I could imagine there's locker room drama but they are all long gone.

This generation are only seeing now what real racism is from the World Cup in Qatar. A true you know what country. Most ppl in North America are so sheltered that they get triggered by an employee following them out the door and claim racism... Meanwhile in the Middle East

I’ll keep it short to avoid sounding like the old ranting man I often am, but the kids today have learned it’s good to claim victimhood. Racism allegations are by far the easiest way to get attention.

There's a lot of weird takes going on in this thread, but this might be the one that takes the cake...Pierre Gervais, who wrote the book, is 61 years old...The reporter who was fired in 2016, Michel Villeneuve, doesn't have his age listed anywhere that I can find, but appears to be a middle aged man. Neither of these people are "kids".

I'm sure it was a distraction but probably not the reason that they lost. Perhaps they just didn't respect their opponent much and ended up letting up some quick goals. On the other hand, Buffalo needed to end their losing skid, and they were facing a weak opponent.

Lol.

Nick Suzuki played his worst game of the year yesterday
Jake Allen played his worst game of the year yesterday
Brendan Gallagher played his worst game of the year yesterday
Jake Evans... More of the same for him. He's just been bad.

Coincidence?

I don't want to poke any holes in this, because watching the world burn is comical, but Jake Allen has been brutal over his past 4 starts, and 5 out of the past 6, with his lone quality start being the night that he became Patty Roy reincarnated against the Wings. Was he distracted for all of those games?

As for a guy like Suzuki-everyone has been saying that high event hockey is fun to watch, but always has a tendency to bite you in the butt. That's what happens.

I wasn’t talking about this book or who wrote it. It was about young people and what they consume through social media. Stories about racism allegations get their attention and that’s why the media pushes these things.

Unjustly fired because the Canadiens & Media corp covered up the truth, you mean?

Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses (even if most of you think I'm nuts). I am at work and it's a busy day, so I can't respond. I'll check back later and try and respond to each of you.

Cheers!

Yeah, I mean, it certainly wasn't because of the weird "kids these dayzzzz!" narrative that he was just trying to push.

Athletes are entertainers. The fact that people put them on these weird pedestals and are shocked when a group of (typically) undereducated individuals say or do something stupid is hilarious. There are certainly more good folks than bad, but yeah, that's what happens.

This is pretty much the point being made in the end. Ppl have way too much time on their hands to dissect this stuff. Dressing rooms have cliques. Not everyone likes each other. Ppl play the game they love, fans cheer regardless of their fav teams morality. Bad ppl actual do win, good doesn't always triumph over evil. All this stuff is just fluff.
