Description
Vancouver will never commit to this scale of a rebuild.
Most of these trades are the same or similar ones recently posted that have favourable or mixed reviews. Vancouver fans will likely want more for some of their players, while some other teams will feel the same way.
Transactions
1.
VAN
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (TOR)
TOR
  1. Horvat, Bo (2 750 000 $ retained)
  2. Schenn, Luke
Détails additionnels:
Seen lots of similar trades posted with mixed reactions. Personally, I don't know that TO accepts but if I am Vancouver I make this trade if it's on the table.
2.
3.
VAN
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (NJD)
NJD
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander (1 750 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
The idea here is Kerfoot fills in for Mercer for the remainder of the season. Blackwood, who based on his numbers over the last three seasons I'm assuming is a cap dump, is moved to create cap space to take on Demko. If Blackwood is not a dump Vancouver could take on a different expiring contract.
NJ keeps up their current level of play their 1st is going to be a very late 1st.
4.
VAN
  1. Blomqvist, Joel [Liste de réserve]
  2. Dumoulin, Brian
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (PIT)
Détails additionnels:
Ian Clark was high on Blomqvist during his draft year. The hope is he could turn him into Demko's eventual replacement when the team is ready to turn things around in 3-4 years.
PIT
  1. Miller, J.T.
Détails additionnels:
I think Pitt is one of the few teams that MAY trading for Miller. They are in a win now window and Miller would put up good numbers for a few more years next to either Crosby or Malkin.
5.
VAN
  1. Salo, Robin
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2023 (NYI)
Détails additionnels:
I'm assuming Salo is a B prospect based on what I have read, not overly familiar with the player. If he's not a B to B+ prospect could replace him.
6.
VAN
  1. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (MIN)
ANA
  1. Dermott, Travis
Détails additionnels:
Anywhere for 3rd-4th.
Vancouver has to many bottom pair D and when Dermott returns he may be the most tradable after Rathbone.

As a Canucks fan, I think these make a lot of sense. I think with 10 million in cap space we could help a few teams at the tdl by taking some expiring contracts and add a few more picks/prospects like that.

I wouldn’t mind Schenn to increase D depth for a playoff run but I don’t think we need Horvat. A much smaller without Niemela or a 1st is probably super doable.

I absolutely agree.
I think for the next 2-3 years Vancouver should try and take on some expiring contracts for futures, then in the offseason sign players in free agency to one year deals that they can then flip at the deadline (similar to what the Ducks are doing with Klingberg). Basically acquire as many lottery tickets as possible.

We could get Kerfoot from Toronto for mid-pick…why give a 1st to Vancouver?

Just do 1st, Blackwood, prospect for Demko

In this case Kerfoot was already traded to Vancouver. Kerfoot isn't having the best start to the year but I would assume his value is probably a 3rd no? Money is expensive to move, so a big part of the cost here would be the retention and to take back Blackwood. Of course this is all contingent on NJ staying at near the top of the standings and their 1st being a very late round pick. If NJ doesn't require the cap relief or want/need a replacement 3C then that trade could be scrapped all together.

I would not do a 1st Blackwood and prospect for Demko unless the prospect was of Mercer's caliber/projection and was either a center or RD. If the prospect played one of those two positions then it definitely makes it more simple just to have the one trade.

Has to be the right offer for sure. I think if the team commits to a rebuild, which I don't think is likely, then Demko will be near or at the end of his current bargain and likely exiting his prime. Absolutely no rush to move him though.

Leafs really have no interest in Horvat...another centre. If the Leafs were going to spend assets it would be for Dman or maybe a LWer.
What's with the Jersey trade for Kerfoot.?
I agree Pens are in a win mode, but Pens have enough aging players on long term contract. Miller's extension is just bad value in cap strapped league.

I agree with your comments. Miller to Pitt is again, one of the few teams that I could POSSIBLY see having interest in the player. Overall I think it's more likely Miller will be in Vancouver for a long long time.

The idea behind the Kerfoot trade came from a couple of different angles, I probably overthought it.

- According to Cap Friendly NJ has just over 1.1M in cap space, if they trade Mercer for Demko they are adding about 4.1M in Cap. I essentially look at Blackwood being a dump in order to help make room for Demko and moving poor contracts isn't cheap.
- Almost every Leaf's AGM trade I see on here has Kerfoot going for either a 2nd or 3rd and that's without retention.
- If NJ wanted a Mercer replacement, Kerfoot could potentially fit that role.
- Trade would be based on NJ staying near the top of the standings so that the pick is a late 1st rounder.

Basically Kerfoot valued at 3rd without retention, then Vancouver essentially eating 4.55M (2.8 for Blackwood, 1.75 for Kerfoot) so that NJ can fit Demko's cap for a very late 1st round pick.

I suppose the value isn't too egregious but I'd be furious if the Devils traded Mercer + 2023 1st + Bahl for Demko + Kerfoot.
Way too early for the Devils to start pawning off futures and younger core pieces for immediate gain, especially so when Demko is currently one of the worst performing starting goalies in the league.

How does Blackwood, Walsh, 1st have “zero chance”

While Bahl, Mercer works?

Blackwood was hyped at one point, he hasn't had a decent statistical year since 19-20. The Canucks just paid a 2nd and had to take Stillman in order to move two years of Dickinson who was under preforming but still an NHL player and his cap is slightly less than Blackwood's. Walsh is fine to add but he is not a big enough carrot for Vancouver to move Demko, in my opinion he cancel's out the cost to move Blackwood.
I see your offer as essentially a late 1st for Demko. It would have to be a big offer for the Canucks to even consider moving Demko and if they do there should be significantly better offers. For those reasons, I believe there is a zero chance the Canucks accept your offer.

Blackwood won’t cost anything to move…would still have some value. And contract is easy. Swap to Daws then.

It might not cost to move Blackwood but if Vancouver is committing to a full rebuild I don't see them wanting to take a 2.8 contract when that players holds little to no value. If they didn't take on that cap they could use then use that space to take another expiring contract that someone is willing to pay them to take.
