Does something like this make sense for Buffalo? They would have Thompson - Horvat - Cozens as their three centers long term with Mittlestadt and Krebs available as well.

It says in the trade that Horvat comes with an extension.

That's not how that works lol. There is zero advantage for Buffalo to have Vancouver sign him to an extension prior to a trade

The advantage is Horvat doesn't sign somewhere else if he agrees to an extension with the Sabres. If Buffalo waits until FA they might not land him. If they really covet the player then it makes sense.

No, Buffalo can literally just sign him to an extension after a trade, like every other pending UFA trade

That's what I'm talking about. Just like Stone did when he was traded to Vegas.

Why would you sign a pending UFA for a prospect with 0 NHL experience? Savoie for an extended Horvat makes absolutely zero sense.

And that doesn't raise the value of the trade, Stone didn't come with an extension, he signed an extension after being traded to Vegas. Same with Hampus Lindholm.

The extension was signed after the trade, but the only reason they were willing to give up Brannstrom (who was one of the best defense prospects in the world at the time) was because they were pretty sure they could get an extension done. It's not tampering, but somehow they knew Stone would be willing to extend. This happens all the time.

Because they would have their top-3 centers locked in long term and Horvat provides experience and leadership rather than being another young player that has to learn the ropes. It's only an idea because Buffalo has at least 4 other young players that can play center long term.

That's not true at all. Vegas was just willing to trade Brannstrom while Calgary was not willing to trade Valimaki. Vegas was able to afford an extension on Stone and Calgary was not.

During trade negotiations teams will often be given permission to talk with the players agent prior to a trade, this is generally done out of good faith and not extorted for trade value. End of the day it is the team that acquires the player that signs the new contract so extended or not the trade value of the player does not change

I'm not talking Buffalo? I'm talking about why would Vancouer make a sign and trade deal for a prospect with 0 NHL expeirence that could be a major risk factor. Buffalo needs to add onto Savoie at least a 1st or another solid prospect.

Because Horvat may not want to sign with Vancouver. The Sabres aren't going to make the playoffs this year with or without Horvat. Why trade Savoie for an ufa when he isn't going to change the outcome of your season and, possibly, leave at the end of the year?

If Buffalo wants Horvat they wait til UFA and pay nothing but money. If he won’t sign as a UFA he won’t sign after a trade either.

Answer: ZERO chance (imo)

Sabres aren’t gonna trade a guy they just picked in the top10

Guys like Mittelstadt & Olofsson *might* be available
But not Savoie- that’s extremely unlikely

If Vegas had talked to Stone's agent and he indicated that Stone was not going to sign in Vegas, would that deal still have went through?

That's the risk with any trade. It was a risk to trade Schneider for 9th OA, which is how we got Horvat in the 1st place. It's possible we could end up with nothing, which is why I don't think the value is too far off. Whether Buffalo has any desire to do this kind of trade is the question I'm asking.

We just aren’t ready yet
And it doesn’t seem like we’re gonna try n rush things like we did when Eichel was here
