Description
Didn’t go too much into detail regarding cap implications. Just meant to give my opinion as to who I believe the Canucks should trade to kick off this rebuild and what types of assets they should look for in return.

Could have traded Miller two seasons ago for a nice haul, but it wasn't enough. Could have traded him last season for a nice haul, but it wasn't enough. So sign him to 7 more years and then try to trade him? Good luck with that.

I still think he has positive trade value, but I do agree the haul will be diminished from what it could have been. A first from Boston this year is likely to be practically a 2nd rounder with how good they’re are doing, so I figured that plus a Mid prospect is probably fair value

Schenn? worth a 2nd 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 In your dreams bud, Best he gets is a 4th, he is a 6/7 D on a good team with a solid D-core, Brodie & Lilly are ahead of him in TO so a 2nd for a rental is very generous & not likely

Whilst I agree with that, 8 x7 for a guy showing signs of regression isn’t what a GM is going to be too happy about, that deal makes it very difficult to trade without you taking a-lot of salary back Smith + Rielly or Foligno is what needs to be moved

Maybe. Also maybe the leafs aren’t the best partner then. Schenn is a cup winner and has actually been playing very well despite the Canucks failures. I suspect the Canucks had many offers last year of similar value but elected to pass due to what Schenn brings in terms of experience/physicality/leadership on such a cheap contract. We’ll see what happens come this trade deadline!

As mentioned in the description the point wasn’t really to go too much into actual cap implications, although that’s why I added smith (who could have easily been swapped with foligno in this case). And I would argue Miller hasn’t actually started regressing, but that he’s been used improperly as a centre due to the Canucks roster construction issues. At wing he’s still dynamic, and is still a point per game player so far while being really good on the power play. A team going all in this season should be interested. I figured Boston might be, considering Bergeron/kreci should be retiring shortly and they are playing so well so far

He has good leadership and grit which you guys seemingly paid a first round pick for when you acquired an already washed Nick Foligno

Edit: Nick Foligno had 16 points in 42 games the season he got traded. Schenn has 7 points in 16 and is on pace to put score Foligno. Schenn is a depth defenseman btw

I agree that a 2nd is probably bit too rich but he easily worth a 3rd and another mid pick at least

I disagree. No chance Boston, or any other team, takes him at $8/m per year for 7 more years, let alone add in more assets. JT is going to be in Vancouver throughout that contract or until they buy it out.

Can’t see Columbus making that trade Horvat would be great, but he is a pending UFA and I can’t see them moving Sillinger.

Let’s be real. If he were a UFA this offseason, I guarantee you a GM would “overpay” for Miller. 8 mil for a point per game winger isn’t outrageous. With the cap going up, it’s not like he has an albatross contract right now

That’s fair. We are in a similar ballpark value-wise anyways. I do think he brings a decent return considering what he brings while being on such a cheap contract. He’s essentially the perfect target for a contender with limited cap flexibility looking for defensive depth and leadership.

Ya maybe Sillinger was a bit too optimistic. But I heard rumours that non-playoff teams were interested so I took a stab at a trade with CBJ. Plus you can’t deny, a Gaudreau-Horvat-Laine line would be sick!

Is JT a free agent? Um...no, he's not. So any GM that would hypothetically "overpay" for him if he was a UFA has no choice but to accept overpaying him for 7 years starting at age 30. Yeah, there are lots of GM's around the league dying to do that. His contract is fine for the first few years, but will absolutely be an albatross by year 3 or 4, and that's why Canuck fans are desperate to trade him. That's what is real.

Considering the free agents that get signed to similar deals every year, and the fact that there was so much interest in JT at last deadline, I don’t think his play so far has been bad enough to warrant the type of league-wide avoidance of his contract that your suggesting. I do think teams have realized however that he clearly can’t play centre at the same level as lw which decreases his value

Canucks fans want him and many others traded bc it’s time to rebuild, simple as that. Doesn’t mean he isn’t useful to a contender who’s only worried about winning now, not cap troubles later

Yeah, GM's get to decide what free agents they want, how much they want to pay them, and for how long they want to pay them. With JT, they don't have those choices, they have to take a 7 year deal starting next year at $8m/year. You really think its the same thing as if JT were just a UFA and GM's could negotiate with him? The truth is, Vancouver overplayed their hand with him the last two seasons and then signed him long term because they didn't know what else to do, and now they are stuck with his contract. You can theorize on here all you want, but let's see if he gets traded. I'll check back with you once a year for the next 7 years.

Lets just state this.......JT is a very, very good hockey player and every GM and coach in the NHL would be happy to have him on their team. That is a given. But, every GM has to manage the salary cap and that is where the problem with JT starts and ends. What GM wants to take on a 7-year contract that is an overpay by even Canuck fans estimations? On top of that, you expect that GM to throw in a 1st round draft pick and another player. It's absurd. Unless there is a GM out there that wants to lose his job, JT is going no where.

I wouldn’t take non playoff team to mean the worst team in the league. It would be sick, but also likely they can’t afford it unless Horvat took a sweetheart extension where he was paid under 7 mil, so they could also fix the major defensive issues they currently have.

A guy who played the 7/8 defenceman on Tampa and has been sent to the minors by Vancouver and Tampa in recent years and is 32 is not worth a 2nd.

Getting him last year at the deadline though offered terrific value, you get him for 2 playoff runs and then evaluate what to do. Now he comes with 7 years of term at the age of 30. That's major major risk and with how he looks this year, that risk is even greater.
