McGinn's contract is too long for this to make sense for Montreal.

Remove the 4th, and maybe it makes it more palatable, but yeah, for Montreal, they basically get another overpaid bottom 6 winger that they'll be stuck with.

Unless Monahan puts up 70 points, There's no way he's getting a 1st round pick back. Even at 50% retention. he's coming off back to back hip surgeries.

No way penguins make that trade. McGinn has looked decent this year. It just cost a 1st to dump Monahan but now he is somehow worth a 1st?

Watching him play it definitely looks like he's we'll recovered and if he puts up 70 he'll cost more than just a 1st at half retained

Because he's been promoted from the 4th to the 1st line since he's playing good and fast

No no no, context doesn't matter, all that matters is what happens months ago.

How can you be so dense as to not understand that things are not allowed to change, what once was remains the same forever. smile

It's two weeks. The guy has been declining in health and production for 3 straight years. Two weeks of play mean nothing in the greater context of what is going on with his career.

It's a terrible trade. McGinn would cost roughly the same dump as Kassian, which was essentially a 2nd and 3rd round pick. Monahan still has no value and costs more for this season. It's trash. The 1st should be nowhere near these players.

Flames were in a much different situation than the Habs are. They were over the cap and needed to add for their Cup run this year. Montreal has cap to spare and rebuilding/retooling/whatever so we don't have to acquire players for a cup run this year. Also Monahan is proving he still has speed and skill and his hips are just fine. There is very little risk to the Pens here (especially at half retention) where as before the season began the Flames had a huge risk keeping Monahan. Now we know that he is back to 100% and on about a 60 point pace, Teams will be lining up for that at the deadline!

Does Pitt really need Monahan though? One of his best sell points is his faceoff ability. Doesn't seem like Pitt is in need of that and if they're just looking for a good winger, they probably can get that for cheaper. Any team that pays the price for Monahan should be doing so because they are desperate for a quick fix higher end faceoff winning style centerman who can play in the top 6. Not sure Pitt is the right team unless someone like Crosby or Malkin gest injured but then there goes their Cup odds too sooo not sure this works for Pitt in any way.

he has 1 year on his contract, you're acting like they're trading for a guy with term and an injury history

If he remains healthy by the TDL, and continues his current pace of production 50-ish point pace, he will have value, despite him being dumped for a 1st a few months ago, which is the point of the replies, to contradict this nonsense;

That's the point. Trading a 1st for a rental who is injury prone and not good is a stupid ass move. He's played 2 weeks. He still has no value. This is a joke.

I think you're foregoing the assumptions that were made, and just cherry picking the info you like to fit your perspective.

1 - that he's injury prone, he's had 1 major injury, other than that, been pretty healthy his whole career. Yes, that's a risk, but that's the point of him playing up to the TDL, 50-55-ish games to assess whether he's healthy

2 - your assuming this trade is done now, at the 2 week mark, I think you're the only one making that assumption, given the pens cap situation, this is almost assuredly a TDL move.

So, with this newfound knowledge of;

1 - he appears to have recovered from the injury, and assumption of him remaining healthy until the TDL
2 - his production maintains at his current pace of 5 points every 7 games, thus 40 points in 55 games by said TDL

Would you still say he has no value because he was dumped for a 1st round pick during the summer?

If your answer is still yes, then the real joke is the lack of comprehension or logical thinking.

That would be sweet for Habs. Turning Monahan into two first round picks and McGinn. But certainly come TDL, when his cap hit is lower, Monahan just might get a good return for the Habs.

Monahan got shut down early in 18 for herniated discs and a groin operation. In 21 he got shut down to get his left hip operated on. In 22 he got shut down to get his right hip operated on. He has seen a decline in production for 3 straight years. I'm assuming nothing, while on the other hand you are assuming he is healthy and assuming he will continue to produce at the same rate. GTFO

so, the answer to my question, which was pretty clear is "No, you cannot see any value to a player who continues at the current pace, and remains injury free in 4 months from now because the TDL is in the future and you only rely on the past to make decisions"

K, have a nice day. wink

So it wasn't just the one injury? And my answer to your hypothetical is this, if a healthy forward producing 50 points can be available at half cap for a cap dump and a 1st, I would absolutely consider it, but this guy isn't it. See yah
