Description
Someone recently suggested that the Canes and Leafs should make a deal around these three players.

Why the Leafs do this: Adds a much more balenced attack. Rather than two top heavy lines, the Leafs can spread out the wealth more. Necas would be a fantastic set up man for JT and Robertson. While KK gets the chance to grow properly by playing 3C and 2PP time. Cap would have to be adjusted to fit Sandin in. Likely moving Holl out.

Why the Canes do it: Nylander is an elite talent and would work wonders beside Patches when hes back. The first line would be dominate with Aho and Svech while the second line becomes a much larger threat with Nylander and Patch. This also saves the Canes from paying 4.82 for a 4th line center.

Why the Leafs dont do it: Nylander value is higher than both Necas and KK combined. Leafs would likely want more back in the return, like a picks back. Leafs also would need to shed cap as well to make the deal work.

Why the Canes dont do it: It makes them a weaker team at the start of the year, as Patches will miss a huge chunk of change at the start. Nylander is also a couple years away from UFA while Necas will still be a RFA at the end of his deal and KK is locked up for 8 years.

Not a chance Canes consider this. If the Canes are trading Necas, they won’t be trading him for someone that will walk in 2 years. And KK isn’t being moved.

Some Canes fans would shoot me for saying this but I like Nylander. However, he is a UFA in 2 years. Trading both Necas and KK straight up for Nylander would be atrocious. That's at least 2 of our top 9, if not top 6 for one guy who walks in two years.

Seems like that is the big issue here which is what I figured, the UFA in 2 years is scary for someone who is likely going to ask for 9+ million

The Canes only have 4 players signed into the 24-25 season, i dont see why they couldnt retain Nylander. maybe i am missing something.

Still no where near a cap compliant team. Leafs like the deal a lot better if KK WASN'T in the deal . But Canes certainly have no motivation to move Necas. Think you really over estimate the value of Nylander and what he add to the second line.....especially when you consider that the Canes lose two forwards.

Really only 1 1/2 forwards. KK sucks.

I really don't think KK sucks, he just hasn't had the chance to prove himself because he is so far down the depth chart in Carolina

Cap space is my first worry but I think the bigger issue is Nylander does like the spotlight, I feel a market like the Canes is not big enough for him? But that's just speculation

This makes no sense. Nylander can't play center, and you want the two guys that are going to fight for that spot. KK's better than a 4C, and is likely the 3C replacement for when Staal departs this summer. I like Nylander a lot, but this is a non-starter package due to the team's needs, not value. You're likely going to argue "Stastny can play 2C" but Rod's made it clear Stastny is the Nino replacement, not the Trocheck replacement. That leaves Jack Drury, who is older than Kotkaniemi... just keep KK.

The reason they can’t keep Nylander is because the core will need to be signed that off-season. Aho, Turbo, Jarvis, Skjei, Pesce, and a couple of others will need to be signed. Adding Nylander to that list is not wise.

Will the Canes actually keep skjei? Feel like hes a prime guy the Canes will just move on from

Why should they? He has played so good since coming from the Rangers, and is the perfect partner for Pesce. Skjei-Pesce has been one of the best analytical pairings in the league. No reason to take that chemistry away.

Really? I assumed Skeji numbers were not great even playing beside Pesce. Always assumed he never changed following the trade

Before the trade, his play was in the dumps, yes. But he benefitted massively from a change in scenery.
